Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The new Supergirl movie hit the box office this weekend, which officially opened Friday, June 26th, 2026. The movie is a production of DC Studios - Warner Bros. Pictures starring Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El / Supergirl. Opening weekend saw around $30 million in US sales and $68 million worldwide. Reports suggest that the movie costs were in the $170 million range, so it has a ways to go to turn a profit. The director is Craig Gillespie, with the writer being Ana Nogueira.
The premise of the movie is that Supergirl must find Krypto the Superdog, whom Krem, an interstellar pirate, has taken. She also befriends Ruthye, played by Eve Ridley, who helps her along the way after Krem attacked her parents. Matthias Schoenaerts plays the villain Krem. Bounty hunter Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, plays an integral role as the movie progresses. Superman does make a very brief appearance, played by David Corenswet. Revenge and justice are the core themes in the movie.
Milly Alcock, who is famous in the HBO Series House of the Dragon, does an excellent job playing Supergirl. However, the storyline is a snoozer. It is a typical superhero-versus-villain story that everyone expects, but this one goes nowhere fast. Most of the movie is CGI and is available in 3D and IMAX, if that helps. Earth does not come into play in the movie, so it's centered on other worlds with many CGI creatures. Supergirl is constantly fighting throughout the movie, and after a while, it just gets boring, sorry. Superdog could have had a more dominant role in the movie, but it doesn't.
Supergirl could be and should be a good movie, but this one misses the mark. A movie with Supergirl, Superman, and Superdog all together for a common goal would be much better. The next one may be. I'll give Supergirl 2 out of 5 hoots because it is very forgettable and has little emotional content.
