Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The following notice was released by the City of Cherryville on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, regarding a wastewater overflow that occurred at the Cherryville Wastewater Treatment Plant on September 28.

Cherryville Wastewater Treatment Plant

NCDEQ Permit No: NC0044440

Receiving Stream: Lick Fork Creek

Estimated Volume Discharged: 1,500 gallons

Cause of Spill: Sewer line from the Wastewater Plant to the Influent Pump station was clogged.

Incident Description

On September 28th at 6:30 am, wastewater personnel identified an overflow associated with a stoppage in the wastewater collection system. The affected manholes and sewer line were obstructed with sand and debris, restricting normal wastewater flow through the collection system. Wastewater overflowed from the collection system and entered Lick Fork Creek. The total discharge to the receiving stream is estimated at approximately 1,500 gallons. Personnel responded to the stoppage and initiated cleaning activities using a high-pressure sewer Jetter in an effort to remove the obstruction and restore normal flow.

Spill Response

Upon identifying the overflow, wastewater personnel responded to the affected area and took corrective action to address the stoppage. The affected sewer line and manholes were cleaned using the sewer Jetter, and normal wastewater flow was restored. Personnel inspected the affected area and took reasonable measures to minimize the duration and potential environmental impact of the discharge, and the affected area was inspected following the incident.

Preventive Measures

The wastewater collection system will continue to be monitored for additional stoppages or conditions that could contribute to future overflows. Routine inspections and cleaning of the affected sewer line and manholes will be performed as necessary to maintain adequate flow and reduce the potential for recurrence. Wastewater staff will continue to sample and inspect the creek for any continuing impacts from the discharge.
