A Grand Return to the Queen City

Excitement filled the air in Ovens Auditorium as fans looked forward to the show. As Starr entered the stage with his band, which included Colin Hay from Men at Work, Steve Lukather from Toto, Hamish Stuart from Average White Band, skilled drummer Gregg Bissonette, Warren Ham from Toto, and Buck Johnson from Aerosmith, the crowd erupted in applause.

The setlist featured a mix of well-known songs, highlighting the skills of each band member. In addition to Ringo’s popular songs and beloved Beatles hits, the crowd enjoyed hit songs from various artists. Songs such as “Down Under” and “Who Can It Be Now?” by Men at Work, “Rosanna” and “Africa” by Toto, and “Pick Up the Pieces” by Average White Band were met with great enthusiasm.

Starr performed a few of his own songs, such as “Photograph” and “Look Up,” from his recent country album of the same name. He also performed several Beatles songs on which he was the lead singer, such as “Honey Don’t,” “Octopus’s Garden,” “I Wanna Be Your Man,” “Yellow Submarine,” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Starr also credited his late Beatles bandmate and songwriter John Lennon with giving him the song “I’m the Greatest” before he sang it.

Starr effortlessly moved back and forth between singing in front and settling in behind his classic Ludwig drum kit. His singing was powerful, and he often showed his trademark peace signs, moving vibrantly around the stage.

The Story Behind the Band

In 1962, Ringo Starr joined the Beatles as their drummer. While he was mostly known for playing the drums, his vocals are featured in two of The Beatles’ popular songs, “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help From My Friends.” Following the Beatles’ break-up in 1970, Starr became a solo artist and eventually founded his own band in 1989, called Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band.

Even with his name at the forefront, Starr designed the group so that each member gets their time to shine. The band works under a slogan, “Everybody on stage is a star in their own right.”

Since the band was established, it has had 14 various lineups, including iconic musicians and relatives: Joe Walsh, Peter Frampton, John Waite, and Sheila E. Also included in the previous band members is Zak Starkey, Starr’s son.

Given that he shares the band with many well-known musicians, Starr ensures that each of them can showcase songs from their careers. Starr generally performs around twelve tracks from both his solo work and his time with the Beatles, and the band members join in to sing three of their most popular songs. Guest band members from the past feature icons such as Stevie Nicks, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Tyler, Bonnie Raitt, Slash, and numerous others.

The current lineup includes: Colin Hay, Steve Lukather, Hamish Stuart, Gregg Bissonette, Warren Ham, and Buck Johnson.

Peace, Love, and Lasting Music

As Starr approaches his 85th birthday on July 7, his energy on stage was undeniable. His vocals remained powerful, and he moved energetically at the front of the stage, often beaming from behind his drum kit while expertly maintaining the rhythm alongside Gregg Bissonette’s lively drumming. For almost two hours, Charlotte witnessed a true rock icon in his element: singing, drumming, consistently flashing his signature peace signs, and honoring the music that shaped rock and roll.

Just as Starr conveyed to the audience at the show’s beginning, he ensured that no one would leave without recognizing at least one song. He certainly delivered, performing an amazing set with the impressive collaboration of his bandmates. Starr and the All-Starr Band are set to continue their tour throughout the summer, concluding with a series of performances at The Venetian in Las Vegas in late September.
