Cherryville, NC (WNN) - The Lady Ironmen softball team won three games this week, each one ended by mercy rule. The young Cherryville team is beginning to find its chemistry. So far this season, the girls are showing power at the plate, strong pitching, and aggressive base running. Coach Lance Beam is getting production across all aspects of the game early in the season.
The week started off with a huge win over the Lady Golden Lions of Shelby. Cherryville blasted its way to a 17-1 conference victory. Grace Capps started in the circle for the Lady Ironmen. She pitched 3 innings, gave up 0 runs, and struck out 7 batters. Audrina Carpenter started for Shelby and went two innings. She gave up 17 runs on 8 hits, struck out 1, and walked 15 Cherryville batters. Camryn Shirley led the way at the plate with 4 RBIs on 2 hits. She, along with Addison Davis and Serenity Thomas, combined for 4 hits, 6 runs, and 7 RBIs. Cherryville ran free on the bases, collecting 8 stolen bases. Jenny Brown stole 4, and Kate Mulvey stole 2 bases. The Lady Ironmen wasted no time putting this game out of reach in the first inning, which led to the game being called after 2 ½ innings under the run rule. During the huge inning, Cherryville sent 15 batters to the plate, scored 9 runs, collected 9 walks, and stole 2 bases. Audrina Carpenter threw 69 pitches in the half inning.
In the top of the first inning, Shelby took an early 1-0 lead. Julianna Vaughn blasted a triple to right field and scored when Audrina Carpenter singled. Sanai McNeil then walked, but 2 strike outs ended the inning and Shelby’s scoring for the night. The bottom of the first began with lead-off hitter, Jenny Brown, walking. She stole second and third base. Kate Mulvey walked as did Jenna Anthony. Jenny Brown tied the game when she stole home. Grace Capps and Serenity Thomas both walked, scoring Mulvey. Anthony scored when Addison Davis singled. Camryn Shirley walked, which scored Capps. Jenny Brown ripped a two-run double, scoring both Thomas and Davis. Landry walked, Kate Mulvey, singled to score Shirley. Kennedy Weathers walked, scoring Brown, and Beam scored after Jenna Anthony walked. Cherryville entered the bottom of the second leading 9-1. Addison Davis started things off in the inning with a walk and scored when Camryn Shirley doubled. Jenny Brown, Landry Beam, and Kate Mulvey all walk, which scores Shirley. Brown scores again, stealing home, and Beam steals third.
Kennedy Weathers singles to score Beam. Weathers is thrown out advancing to second. Jenna Anthony rips a line drive double to third, then advances to third on a throwing error as Mulvey scores. Grace Capps and Serenity Thomas are walked, followed by a single from Addison Davis that scores Anthony. Camryn Shirley singles to score Capps and Thomas. Davis is called out for leaving the bag too early. The Lady Ironmen were now leading 17-1. The game ended after the top of the third as two Shelby batters struck out and one grounded out. The win improved Cherryville to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
The second game of the week was a 10-0 non-conference victory for Cherryville. The Lady Ironmen improved their record to 3-2 overall and remained 1-2 in conference play. Landry Beam was the top hitter, going 3 for 4. Jenny Brown had a good outing in the circle, allowing 4 hits, 0 runs, 2 walks, and striking out 9 over 5 innings. As a team, Cherryville drew 5 walks, stole 8 bases, and made 0 errors. Leading hitters for Forestview were Emily Lowrance, Kaitlyn Baker, Addey Phillips, and Sophia Green with 1 hit each.
The game was scoreless until Cherryville took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jenny Brown walked, followed by a single from Landry Beam, then she stole second. Kate Mulvey hits a line drive that is too hot to handle and reaches on an error, allowing Brown to score. Mulvey steals second, and Beam steals home. Mulvey steals third before Kennedy Weathers singles to score Mulvey. Grace Capps reaches on an error, then advances to second on a throwing error. Maddie Avery sacrifices to shortstop, scoring Weathers. Camryn Shirley started the bottom of the fourth by reaching on an error in center field, and Landry Beam singled to shortstop and stole second. Ella Blake sacrifices to the pitcher to score Shirley. Kennedy Weathers walks, then steals second. Jenna Anthony singles scoring Beam and Weathers. Anthony scores on a double by Grace Capps. The bottom of the fifth began with Camryn Shirley walking, followed by a single from Jenny Brown. Landry Beam ended the game with a 2-run walk-off double.
The Lady Ironmen ended their busy week with a trip to Shelby. Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the Lady Golden Lions, as Cherryville won 14-1. The win moved Cherryville to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Jenna Anthony went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. Jenny Brown drove in 4 runs off 1 hit and 1 walk. Gracie Capps was the starter for the Lady Ironmen and allowed 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk, and struck out 6 in four innings. As a team, Cherryville drew 8 walks, made 0 errors, and stole 6 bases. Kennedy Weathers had 3 of the stolen bases. Audrina Carpenter started in the circle for Shelby. She allowed 9 runs, off 2 hits, gave up 5 walks, and struck out 3 in 2 2/3 innings of work. Leading the way at the plate for the Lady Golden Lions was Kennedy Collins, going 2 for 2, and Julianna Vaughn, going 1 for 2 with 1 RBI.

The top of the second began with Addison Davis walking, a pitch then hit Camryn Shirely, and a wild pitch advanced both runners. Jenny Brown launched a rocket to right field that turned into a three-run inside-the-park home run. Landry Beam walked and stole second base. Kennedy Weathers hit a line drive to shortstop and reached on an error that scored Beam. At the top of the third, Maddie Avery is safe after a dropped third strike. A pitch hits Addison Davis, then Camryn Shirley and Serenity Thomas walk, scoring Avery. Jenny Brown walked, scoring for Davis. Landry Beam hits a two-run double that scores Shirely and Thomas. Kennedy Weathers triples to score Brown and Beam. Jenna Anthony doubles to score Weathers. A pitch hits Grace Capps; a wild pitch advances Anthony and Capps. Maddie Avery walks, and Addison Davis singles to score Anthony. Shelby got on the board in the bottom of the third. Kennedy Collins doubled to left field, then scored when Julianna Vaughn singled. Cherryville added 1 more run at the top of the fourth as Jenny Brown reached on an error, then advanced to second. She next stole third base and scored, followed by Landry Beam being walked. The game ended on the mercy rule in the bottom of the fourth as all Shelby could produce was a strikeout, a pop-up, and another strikeout.
The Lady Ironmen will have a less hectic schedule this week, with only two games to play. Both are non-conference matchups. They will host Lincoln Charter on March 16 and then travel to Piedmont Community Charter on March 18.
