Cherryville, NC (WNN) - This week, the Cherryville High School men’s tennis team only had one match, and they made it count. The Ironmen were victorious over West Lincoln at home by a score of 8-1. The ladies’ soccer team had two home conference matches; they won against Bessemer City and tied West Lincoln.
There’s no place like home, at least this week. That was true for the Ironmen tennis team. Cherryville hosted West Lincoln at the Donna Lavery tennis courts in Cherryville on March 26. The 8-1 victory improved Cherryville to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference. The Ironmen are currently in 2nd place, although tied with Burns, they hold a slight edge in the tiebreaker. Highland Tech is alone in 1st place with a 5-0 conference record. The next match for Cherryville will be at home against East Gaston at 4 pm on March 31.

Rival Bessemer City came to town Tuesday, and home was kind to the Lady Ironmen as they downed the Lady Yellow Jackets 9-0. Kaydence Ellis had a huge night, scoring 4 goals and 8 points on 6 shots. Five other team members scored goals as well. Mallie Emerson scored 1 goal and 2 points, taking 5 shots. Kate Bookout scored 1 goal, 2 points, took 6 shots, Caidence Dellinger scored 1 goal, 2 points, took 3 shots, Gracie Adkins scored 1 goal, 2 points, took 6 shots, and Amber Brittain scored 1 goal, 2 points, and took 1 shot. Dakota Funderburke made 3 saves.
The Lady Rebels and the Lady Ironmen battled to a 0-0 tie on Friday night in Rudisill Stadium. The score was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation, and as the first overtime began, so did the rain. Heavy rain fell throughout the first and second overtime periods. The match ended in a draw after no winner was determined through two overtime periods. West Lincoln’s record is now 5-5-1 overall and 5-3-1 in conference play. Cherryville is now 4-6-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the conference. Emily Allen had a workout, making 23 saves. Kate Bookout took 4 shots, Kaydence Ellis attempted 3 shots, Gracie Adkins took 3 shots, and Mallie Emerson took 2 shots.
Through 11 matches, Cherryville has made 30 total goals for an average of 2.7 goals per match and taken 133 shots. Leading scorers are Kate Bookout with 10 goals, for 20 points, averaging 0.9 goals per match. Gracie Adkins scored 8 goals and 16 points for an average of 0.7 goals per match.
