Cherryville, NC (WNN)—Most Cherryville area residents were without power Friday night into Saturday, September 28th, 2024, due to Hurricane Helene. However, the City of High Point electric crews from High Point, NC, arrived to help finish restoring power to Cherryville electric customers.

The remnants of Hurricane Helene knocked out power and toppled trees as it headed north up through western North Carolina from Florida early Friday morning, September 27th, 2024.

City of High Point NC Linemen Arrive

Bobby Fletcher, Head Lineman Supervisor with High Point and having 36 years of service, stated they brought nine crew members and five trucks to help Cherryville. ” I’ve been through three or four of these hurricanes. We plan to stay here until everyone gets their lights back on.”

Duke Power workers got the main substation back to operable around 9 AM Saturday. The substation provides the primary electrical circuits to the City of Cherryville.

City Power is Three-Fourths On

As of 9:45 AM, Saturday, Cherryville had three-fourths of the power on, including Hwy 150 to Walmart and Main Street. Terry Clinton with the City of Cherryville Electric Department stated, “We have three of our four circuits on now, and we are heading towards the west side of town to get that circuit on.”

After the primary circuits are on, secondary and individual lines to City customers will still need to be repaired. Around noon on Saturday, the City of High Point electric crews were working to restore power in the Westgate area of Cherryville.

The City of Cherryville received help from the City of High Point through the ElectriCities program, which allows city utilities to help other program members.

After many of the City of Cherryville customers were back on, lines started forming at restaurants and gas stations late Saturday morning. Customers could be seen filling up their cars and containers with fuel, and long lines formed.

The Clean Up Continues

While no one has been injured, some pretty large trees were down and on homes in the Cherryville area from the winds of Hurricane Helene. Further west in North Carolina, especially the mountains, have been devasted by flooding. Many roads and highways are washed away or shut down. I-40 is shut down at the NC/TN border. Travel to the western part of NC is not advised. Flood warnings are still in effect in parts of North Carolina, which is the greatest threat now.
