The City Of Cherryville Gets Power: Others Still Waiting

By: Rusty Wise – Wise News Network

Cherryville, NC (WNN)—Cherryville gets power, as most of the City of Cherryville, North Carolina’s electric customers, were back up and running as of Monday, September 30th, 2024.

In a statement from Cherryville City Manager Brian Dalton:

“All primary power has been restored as of last night (9-29-2024). The only other issues we should have are services that may have been pulled from structures or meters that were pulled off. Customers will need an electrician before we can restore power”.

You Might Need An Electrician

Most electric companies, including Cherryville, will only restore power to damaged structures or electrical services attached to them once a licensed electrician assesses and repairs the home or business.

Scotty Hutchens, Operations Manager at Mister Sparky – Wise Electric Control Inc., stated:

“We run into this situation a lot after storms. People must understand that the electric meter box and electrical attached to their home is their responsibility. We have to access the damage, pull permits, and make repairs before the power company will turn them back on”.

After a storm, it is best to be proactive and call a licensed electrician to start the process if you have electrical damage.

Hurricane Helene

All power was lost to the City of Cherryville and most surrounding regions as Hurricane Helene headed north from Florida into North Carolina early Friday morning. Maximum winds approaching 60 MPH caused most damage from 7 AM to 10 AM on Friday.

The City of Cherryville received assistance from a nine-man electrical crew from the City of High Point. This crew is now heading to Shelby, NC, to assist in electrical restoration efforts there. Presently, the High Point crew is staying at the Cherryville Fire Department, as there are no available hotel rooms nearby.

Cherryville Fortunate

On Sunday afternoon, approximately 90 percent of Cherryville had power, and residents were packed into restaurants; some were cash-only. Also, a steady, long line had formed at the local ice machine at the end of East First Street in Cherryville.

Cherryville, NC, only experienced minor flooding with less than 6 inches of rain and is fortunate to have power and most communication services restored. Luckily, no significant injuries have been reported in Cherryville. Other surrounding towns, such as Kings Mountain and Shelby, still have partial power outages, and work is ongoing in those areas.

Devastation

Others were not as fortunate. The western mountains and foothills of North Carolina and the entire southern Appalachian mountain chain have been devastated by flooding and landslides in some areas with up to 29 inches of rain. Overall, Hurricane Helene has led to at least 120 deaths. Included in the deaths are six southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee. In Buncombe County, NC, where the city of Asheville is located, at least 35 people have died due to Hurricane Helene, and many others are still missing in the mountainous areas. Unfortunately, the death toll is expected to rise.
