Cherryville, NC (WNN) – The remnants of Hurricane Helene blew through Cherryville, NC, as it headed north on Friday morning, September 27, 2024.
Hurricane Helene
According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, hit the US near Perry, Florida, with 140 mph sustained winds and higher gusts. The large and dangerous Hurricane made landfall at approximately 11:15 pm on Thursday, September 26, 2024. It lowered to a Category 1 through the night as it tracked north through Georgia.
Cherryville Impact
Tropical Storm Helene drifted to the east and passed through the Cherryville area between 7 am and 10 am with wind gusts approaching 60 MPH at times. The Cherryville area was on the right side of the storm, which was the strongest. Sporadic trees and power lines were down across the City. Power was out in most areas of the City, which serves over 2,000 customers.
On Friday morning, WNN surveyed the Cherryville area and found trees across numerous roads, such as Highway 150 West (Shelby Hwy), West Academy Street, Paul Beam Road, Mary’s Grove Road, and Old Post Road. Street flooding also occurred on East Academy Street and East Church Street in front of the Cherryville Police Department.
Clean Up and Restoration Timeline
Chris King – City of Cherryville Public Works Director, stated:
“We plan to start clearing the roads and working on the electric system around 111:00 am after the winds die down and it is safe. I’m not sure if we will get much help like in past storms because this storm has affected everyone around us. The towns that have helped in the past have their own problems with this storm”.
According to Cherryville City Manager Brian Dalton, no significant issues or injuries have been reported. No timeline was given for power restoration in the City, but according to Dalton, restoration times would be “extended.” In addition to power, other means of communication, such as cable, cell phone coverage, etc., were also down.
Flooding Now A Concern
The storm will be out of the Cherryville and western North Carolina area by Thursday afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, the Piedmont of NC has received significant rainfall of 8 plus inches in the last 24 hours. For the next few days, the most significant threat will be flooding from all the rain from Hurricane Helene. The entire western part of North Carolina is under a Flash Flood Warning. Residents are urged to take caution in flood-prone areas and evacuate as needed. For WNN video coverage check out the video below.
