Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Welcome to the Wise News Network Monday Movie Review, our new series where we take a closer look at the films that became box office hits over the weekend. We'll tell you what movie everyone was talking about, as well as a closer look at the storytelling aspects of the film itself (spoiler-free, of course). Afterwards, we will rate it, and you can decide whether it's worth adding to your watchlist this week.
The highly anticipated Wicked: For Good was released on Friday, November 21, and everyone is talking about it. Even if you've never heard of this movie, you've probably seen all the promotional advertising for it. From the pink and green apparel to the themed popcorn buckets, the PR for this movie has been everywhere.
Wicked: For Good, directed by Jon M. Chu, is the second and final installment of the two-part film adaptation of the Broadway musical, which is loosely based on a book inspired by the 1939 classic, The Wizard of Oz. Are you following me?
If you haven't seen the first movie, Wicked (2024), I highly recommend watching it first to understand the story's gravity fully. Wicked: For Good picks up right where the first film left off, playing out the relationship between Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo). Despite the larger-than-life sets, vibrant colors, and powerful musical numbers, the story remains grounded in today's society. Portraying themes of loyalty, identity, and the complex question of what it truly means to be "good" or "wicked" in a world that is so divided. Through Elphaba and Glinda's relationship, the movie explores how fear, politics, and public perception can test loyalty. It also dives deeper into identity and the "otherness", showing how quickly someone can be labeled based on their appearance or beliefs. Ultimately, the film argues that "good" and "wicked" aren't absolute. They are shaped by perspective, power, and the voices that dominate the narrative.
After entering the theaters with a sense of excitement and wonder about what would happen to Elphaba and Glinda next, I left with a sense of reflection on the deeper meaning of friendship and understanding. I guess you can say that I have been changed "for good".
Now that you have reached the end of the review, we will rate it on a scale of 1-5 hoots.
Movie Rating System (Owl-Hoot Scale):
I think it's clear that Wicked: For Good deserves 5 hoots.
