WNN Monday Movie Review: Obsession

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - In its ninth week of release, the horror film Obsession, directed by twenty-six-year-old Curry Barker, has continued to gain traction in the film industry, earning praise from online critics and horror fans alike as one of the best horror films of the year.

The film follows a young man named Bear (played by Michael Johnston), whose insecurities get the better of him as he struggles to tell Nikki (played by Inde Navarrette) that he loves her. Built around the simple premise of "be careful what you wish for," the story quickly spirals into something far more disturbing. If you enjoy horror films that intentionally leave you feeling uncomfortable, Obsession is worth adding to your watchlist.

A Wish Gone Wrong

After being stuck in the friend zone with Nikki, Bear comes across a novelty item from a gift shop called the "One Wish Willow." Wishing that Nikki would love him more than anyone in the world, he unknowingly sets off a chain of events that takes the film's title, Obsession, to an entirely new level.

While the film contains disturbing themes, including graphic violence, suicide, and sexual content, its underlying message remains clear and may be a hot take: Bear is the true antagonist, not Nikki. His overwhelming insecurity blinds him to the pain he inflicts on the person he claims to love. Throughout the film's 108-minute runtime, Bear remains consumed by his own desires. The film examines the dangerous transformation of love into obsession, where one person's identity and autonomy are sacrificed to satisfy another's desires.

Behind The Scenes

The reason why this film works so well, considering its rather low budget of one million dollars, is that it showcases the full potential of an indie horror movie. The acting performances in this film feel authentic and scary; the lighting doesn't showcase too much, leaving the audience to look for the action in those darker, atmospheric moments; and the cinematography and blocking of each scene paint the entire movie in this unconventional 1.50:1 aspect ratio.
