Orem, UT (WNN) - Tyler Robinson has officially been charged in connection with the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025.
Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray announced the charges filed by Utah County prosecutors in a press conference. Robinson was charged with aggravated murder, two counts of obstruction of justice for hiding the rifle and discarding his clothing, two counts of witness tampering for instructing a roommate to delete texts and stay silent, and one count of committing a violent offense in front of children.
Gray has also filed a notice of intent to pursue the death penalty, which means Robinson will stay in jail without the option for bail.
Robinson is being held at the Utah County Jail and will appear in court on Tuesday, September 16. He is expected to attend court virtually at 3 p.m. local time (5 p.m. ET).
According to charging documents, "Robinson's father reported that when his wife showed him the surveillance image of the suspected shooter in the news, he agreed it looked like their son." His father told Robinson to turn himself in, although he initially refused; he later changed his mind.
The charging documents also mention that Robinson's parents then asked him why he committed the crime, to which he said, "There is too much evil and the guy [Charlie Kirk] spreads too much hate." Investigators have spoken to Robinson's family and executed a search warrant at his home in Washington, Utah.
On Sunday, Utah's governor, Spencer Cox, mentioned that investigators are working to determine what motivated the attack. He added that we could learn more once Robinson shows up for his first court appearance.
Cox mentioned that Robinson's romantic partner was transgender, which some have suggested means the suspect was targeting Kirk due to his anti-transgender views. However, officials have yet to confirm if that was a factor. Kirk was shot while addressing a question related to mass shootings, gun violence, and transgender issues.
Gray did not answer when asked if transgender issues were linked to the motive behind Kirk's shooting. Instead, he referred to the charging documents, saying those would cover those points.'
As of now, the nation will be watching as Robinson appears in court. With the charges filed and the investigation still ongoing, much has yet to be revealed.
