Charlotte, NC (WNN) - For all maritime history lovers, the Titanic Experience, called Titanic Echoes From The Past, opened in Charlotte on May 15th, 2026, and runs through the summer until September 7th.  The experience location is at The Park and Conference Center in Freedom Hall.

The Exhibit

The Titanic Experience takes you back to 1912, when shipbuilding was a race for speed and luxury.  The massive exhibit takes up most of the hall, with its maze-like layout.  Upon entry, all quests receive a boarding pass with the name of a passenger, and the passenger's fate will be known to you at the end.  The timeline starts with the ship's construction and continues through the sinking (spoiler alert).  Over 300 original artifacts are displayed, most of which are part of the White Star Line items found on the Titanic and other sister ships of the time period.  You can step through replica hallways of the ship, view state rooms, as well as the grand staircase, and see the architecture of the Titanic.

North Carolina Connections

The Titanic has some eerily North Carolina connections.  The Biltmore House owners, George Washington Vanderbilt II, his wife, and his daughter were supposed to be on the Titanic, but canceled at the last minute.  A message was found during renovation at the Hatteras Weather Station on the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  On April 14th, 1912, a message read "Received, Hatteras Station, at 11:25 p.m. Titanic C.Q.D." "Have Struck Iceberg!" Also, a mail clerk, Oscar Scott Woody, was on board the Titanic; he was from Roxboro, North Carolina.  The exhibit mentions other Carolina connections, including both North and South Carolina.

The Tour Experience

The self-paced tour lasts approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.  An audio option is available that uses your own cell phone and personal earbuds.  Each audio track corresponds to numbered exhibits.  However, the numbers do not always go in the exhibit flow order, which can be confusing.  The exhibit room temperature was quite cold the day I went.  There is also an ice replica of an iceberg that you can touch.  Note, you should take a jacket if you are cold-natured, as the entire exhibit area can be cool.  A virtual VR headset tour takes place in a separate room for an additional charge.  The exhibit tour concludes with James Cameron's iconic 1997 movie Titanic.  The largest-grossing film in history.  Of course, no exhibit tour would be complete without the ending gift shop, where you can find all your Titanic and White Star Line memorabilia.  Overall, you will travel back in time to 1912, learn about the Titanic, the White Star Line, and the lives of its passengers.
