Peace Walk Passes Through Charlotte

Posted

Charlotte, NC (WNN) - On Thursday, January 15th, 2026, the Buddhist monks continued their 2,300-mile journey from Fort Worth, Texas, into Charlotte, NC. Despite the cold weather, these monks will continue walking for peace until they reach their destination in Washington, D.C.

As this walk continues across state lines, many people are dedicating time during their day to witness this peace movement. At the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, students skipped class on their first week back from winter break to observe this walk firsthand. As crowds gathered outside the UNCC entrance, temperatures dropped, and winds picked up, leaving many onlookers anxiously waiting in the cold.

Witness The Movement

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said UNCC student Allie Quoyle, who attended the Walk For Peace movement with her roommates, Emily Olessya and Grace Richardson.

Another UNCC student, Karli, described it as a rare event in the Charlotte community, noting that seeing so many people gather in unity is not something you normally see. Her friend, Angelle, held yellow roses and explained that they symbolized peace and happiness. A gift for the monks as they walk past their campus.

Karli, another student from UNCC, mentioned that seeing everyone come together and show up united, especially in Charlotte, is rare. Her friend Angelle was holding yellow roses and explained that they symbolize peace and happiness, given as a thank-you for their movement.

Several people stood holding roses and food to offer the monks, who are only permitted to accept what has been given to them. One person, Hannah Justin, waited with a bag of medication. She hoped the monks could use the supplies for the long journey ahead.

Their Walk Continues

As the monks passed, onlookers paused to witness a brief but powerful moment. People shared moments of silence, offered small gifts, and drew inspiration from the walk. Though the monks keep walking, their message of peace leaves a lasting impression on both large cities and small towns along the way.

You can follow their route here for live updates throughout the day and track their walk. They are projected to reach Washington D.C. by mid-February 2026.
