Raleigh, NC (WNN) - Teachers from across North Carolina converged on Raleigh today, May 1st, 2026. The planned protest by the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE), named " Kids Over Corporations," drew thousands all across downtown Raleigh, North Carolina's Capitol. The center of the protest, which featured planned speakers, was Halifax Mall, located at 300 N Salisbury St, next to the Capitol building. Some workers in the Capitol were told to stay home due to the rally and large crowds. Some estimates of the crowd exceeded 20,000, most of whom wore red in support. Other protestors could be seen protesting additional issues at this May Day event. The rally ran from 10 AM to 3 PM, with many commuters arriving by bus from the districts.
Studies show that North Carolina ranks 46th in school teacher pay nationwide and is expected to have a decrease in funding for the upcoming year. Protestors want more public school funding, higher teacher pay, fewer corporate tax cuts, and less funding for private school vouchers.
Today, over 22 North Carolina counties, including Gaston, Mecklenburg, and Cabarrus, and many city school districts canceled classes for the rally. Gaston County changed Friday to an optional teacher workday.
North Carolina lawmakers in Raleigh have yet to pass a state budget, adding to the frustration of protestors. The last time North Carolina passed a state budget was in 2023. North Carolina is the only state in the country without a comprehensive state budget. Today was the largest teacher protest in years.
