Little Monsters, Big Crowds: Halloween Traditions in Cherryville

Posted

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - With Halloween completed without any major hitches and everyone prepping for Thanksgiving, we're looking back at two of the ways we celebrate this season! While everyone knows about Scaryville, Cherryville also hosts two more Halloween-related events. These are the Little Monsters March and Halloween on Elm Street.

On the Friday before Halloween, Cherryville hosts an annual parade for our younger citizens and their parents. The children walk with their parents down Main Street, and once they make it through the parade, they return to gather candy from local vendors. This year, Emily Dellinger, the Cherryville Chamber of Commerce Director, estimated that the number of children present remained at around 400. She was also happy to note that more vendors from outside Main Street have been participating by setting up tables to hand out candy.

While local parents and children take part, the Cherryville High School Marching Band leads the parade. The event also includes Cherryville Elementary School, so any student who receives a permission slip can come out. While some may think keeping that many young children under control would be hard, local teacher Katy Beam says the students all know what to do and have a great time. Students are also allowed to be picked up from the event, so many don't return to school that day.

We interviewed one of our favorite custom sets, the lion tamer and lion. Ana Cease had her first Halloween with her son and went all out. She transformed a wagon into a cage and pulled him behind her in the parade. While we didn't manage to catch the ringmaster, this was a full family costume set, with her husband performing the final role. "Daddy may be the leader, but mama tames the lion!" Cease said the costume took her about 2 weeks to put together and was ready to have fun this Halloween.

Halloween on Elm Street

Cherryville cordons off Elm Street each year for a safe but traditional trick-or-treating environment. The event lasts from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, giving trick-or-treaters plenty of time to hit every participating house. The Cherryville Police also gather candy to split equally among the houses, to help with the financial burden of such a large crowd of ghosts and ghouls. This year, the street was as packed as ever with visitors from all around the area.
