Shelby, NC (WNN) - Have you ever wanted to spend a quiet afternoon floating down the river, taking in the natural beauty of Cleveland County? Now you can use the new First Broad River Kayak Boat Ramp located at 940 West Grover Street, Shelby, NC.
At 11 am on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, Shelby Mayor Stan Anthony welcomed community members, elected officials, and project partners to celebrate the official ribbon-cutting of the new river access point.
Construction on the boat ramp began in June 2025 and was completed in December 2025, providing a safer, more accessible entry point for kayakers on the First Broad River.
Funded by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission, the First Broad River Kayak Boat Ramp is part of a designated blueway trail. This type of trail is only used by non-motorized paddle craft for recreational purposes.
Broad RiverKeeper David Caldwell wanted to inform people that this is a planned 65-mile paddle route that begins in the South Mountains and extends into South Carolina. The long-term goal is to create a continuous paddle trail with regular access points along the river.
Caldwell said organizers are working towards adding another access point near Zion Church Road and Metcalf Road. The ultimate goal is to provide access points every 5-7 miles along the entire 65-mile passage of the First Broad River.
