Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Like many of the rural communities in NC under the Ice Storm warning, Cherryville experienced a relatively peaceful Sunday morning. Many, if not all, the businesses were shut down, with the only noise to interrupt the quiet being the rare passing ATV or car. The area was fortunate to receive mostly sleet instead of the freezing rain that had been predicted.
With temperatures ranging from the teens to the low twenties, the sleet has set up on the road in a layer about an inch thick. This leaves larger vehicles sliding on the surface, with lightweight vehicles such as ATVs and UTVs fairing better in these conditions. Please use caution if you must leave home, as not only are road conditions bad, but some drivers are using the roads for leisure. WNN captured one such driver in action on one of Cherryville's main intersections.
As previously stated, the temperature has remained well below freezing throughout the day, allowing sleet to accumulate rapidly. The inch-thick layer has been slowly added to all day by a wintry mix of sleet, snow, and rain. Be careful when outside in these conditions, as the rain, along with the cold, can quickly form ice on clothes. It is best to have a waterproof outer layer with several layers for warmth underneath it.
However, it is still expected that the weather conditions will worsen. Those in the Ice Storm Warning zone are expected to receive more winter weather beginning around 4:00 PM on January 25, 2026. If this comes as freezing rain, then the current sleet layer can become solid. This would make tomorrow's driving conditions very dangerous. It could also coat tree limbs and powerlines, causing outages in the storm zone. Please exercise caution when leaving home, and if you need tips on what to do if your power goes out, read our article here.
