Tropical Storm Warning – Cherryville NC Shelter Available

Cherryville, NC (WNN)—The National Weather Service Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for western North Carolina, including Gaston County. The warning is effective from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, September 26th, 2024, and is expected to be extended. Details per the National Weather Service for the Gaston County, NC, area and the Cherryville, NC, shelter are below.
Wind
Peak Wind Forecast: 20-30 mph with gusts approaching 60 mph.
Rain
Peak Rainfall Amounts: Additional 2-4 inches, with locally higher amounts as you head westward.
Tornados
The situation is favorable for tornadoes. Warnings will be issued as needed.
Hurricane Helene Impact
“Hurricane Helene is expected to make landfall over the Florida Panhandle this evening and move quickly north through Georgia. Significant, potentially catastrophic flash flooding and major mainstem river flooding are expected over portions of the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia later today into early Friday, especially along the Blue Ridge escarpment. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 mph with up to 80 mph across the higher ridge tops will be associated with Helene as the center of the storm tracks just west of the County Warning Area tonight into Friday morning. The combination of saturated soils and strong wind gusts will result in numerous downed trees, leading to numerous power outages. Numerous landslides may occur across the mountains, with large, damaging debris flows or slope failures possible. Brief isolated tornadoes are also possible”. – National Weather Service
Be Prepared
Western NC and Gaston County are forecasted to experience the heaviest impact from Hurricane Helene early Friday morning, September 27th.
Residents are urged to be prepared for falling trees, power outages, flash flooding, and heavy rains. It is advised to charge cell phones, keep a first aid kit and flashlights handy, ensure vehicles have a full tank of fuel, check generators, have an adequate supply of drinking water and non-perishable food, and have a plan for pets. It is essential to avoid driving in flooded areas and to stay off roads unless absolutely necessary.
Shelter
Cherryville, NC, residents will have a shelter at the First Baptist Church Christian Outreach Center (COC). In the event of a power outage at the COC shelter, the Cherryville Fire Department will open as a shelter. Should Cherryville area residents need assistance with shelter, they should call 704-435-1717 or in case of an emergency call 911.
