Cherryville, NC (WNN) – Tropical Storm Debby mainly left water behind in northwest Gaston County, NC. Debby made its second and final landfall near Bulls Bay, South Carolina, at 2 am EDT, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The storm lost much of its punch as it headed farther west on Thursday, August 8th, 2024, and into Gaston County.ย

Cherryville, NC, recorded a temperature of 71 degrees, low pressure of 29.47, and a daily total rain accumulation of 2.67 inches as of 3:30 pm (WNN Weather Center). Averaging gusts of 12 MPH were also recorded in the Cherryville area during the day.

According to Cherryville City Manager Brian Dalton, no major issues occurred during the storm. However, sporadic power outages, swollen creeks, and fallen trees have been reported in the Gaston County area.

Seven deaths have occurred since Debby made landfall on the Gulf Coast of Florida on Monday morning as a Category 1 hurricane with 80 MPH sustained winds.

The farther east you go in North Carolina, the more rain, wind, and even tornado damage has occurred, with over 100,000 customers without power, according to Duke Energy.

As with any storm, avoid water in the roadways and downed power lines, and watch for falling limbs and trees. Most rivers and creeks in the Gaston County area are at monitor stages but may continue rising as the water returns toward the coast. One such river is the South Fork Catawba River at Lowell in Gaston County, NC, where the National Weather Service has issued a River Flood Warning from Thursday at 11:00 p.m. until Saturday at 9:13 p.m. EDT.

Gaston County, NC, is still under a flash flood warning until 5:00 pm EDT today.
