Cherryville, NC (WNN)- The Ironmen wrestling team had two individuals to place in competition, and the concert band has been preparing for their Christmas concert in a week that saw many scheduling changes.
The holiday season and unexpected circumstances can wreak havoc on planned events, and this week had quite a few scheduling changes. A recent fire at the host venue postponed Saturday’s NCHSAA Cheer Team Championships; no rescheduled date has yet been confirmed.
The basketball game against North Gaston has been changed to February 12th, and Steven Wyatt did not participate in the scheduled swim meet at Shelby.
Two wrestlers placed in the medal standings during the Hampton Tuttle Tournament held at Hibriten High School on Saturday, December 6th.
Maddox Carrigan took first place gold in the 285lbs class, and Geo Martinez brought home the 2nd place silver in the 106lbs class. This was an individual tournament with ten schools competing. Participating schools were Alleghany, Ashe County, Avery County, Cherryville, East Burke, Hibriten, Mitchell, North Wilkes, Starmount, and West Caldwell. The Ironmen wrestlers continue to be strong in competition. The Cherryville lads performed well on this day; the results are listed below by classification.
106lbs. Geovanny Martinez (15-3) placed second and scored 16 team points. He had a bye in the quarterfinal round. The semifinal round was won by a fall over Brody Denny (Ashe County) at the 2-minute mark. The first-place match was also won by a fall over Evan Lovatto (West Caldwell) in 1:31 minutes.
113lbs. Holden Walker (13-6) placed fourth and scored 9.5 team points. In the semifinal, he was bested by Ellis Whisnant (West Caldwell) by technical fall at 4:36 minutes. The consolation semifinal he won by major decision over Valentino Guerrero (Alleghany). He was defeated in the third-place match by Jon Pritz (Avery County) in a technical fall (3:25).
120lbs. Bryson Yarbro (4-9) scored 3 team points. He received a bye in the first round. The quarterfinal was won in a technical fall (1:36) by Ethan Goins (North Wilkes). Bryson defeated Noah Bentley (West Caldwell) by virtue of fall (1:23) in cons round 2. Cons round 3 was won by Bret Mclean (Mitchell) in a fall (3:32).
126lbs. Jonah Harrison lost in the quarterfinal to Bryson McFalls (Mitchell) by fall. He came up short in the cons round 1 to Elijah Galgano (Ashe County) in a fall (1:55).
132lbs. William Davis (3-9) scored 3 team points. He received a bye for the championship round 1. In the quarter final, he lost to Jacob Miller (Hibriten) by fall (1:43). Davis won the next round by forfeit over Davante Hayes. Lochlyn Starkey (Avery County) won the cons round 3 by major decision.
138lbs. Mason Powers scored 5.5 team points. Powers had a bye for the Championship round 1. He won by a technical fall over Julius Kershner (East Burke) at the 3:03 mark in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, he lost by decision to Yostin Ayala (West Caldwell). Powers dropped the cons semifinal by decision to Isaiah Galgano (Ashe County).
165lbs. John Hedgpeth (6-11) placed fourth and scored 8 team points. Hedgpeth won the quarterfinal by fall over Tommy Sturgill (North Wilkes). Alexis Nuevo (Alleghany) took the semifinal by fall (0:29). Hedgpeth had a bye in the cons semifinal. Sam Smith won by fall (2:31) in the third-place match.
285lbs. Maddox Carrigan (13-3) placed first, scoring 25 team points. Carrigan took the quarterfinal by fall (1:41) over Deren Hise (Mitchell). Maddox won by major decision in the semifinal over Sevanti Moore (Hibriten). The first-place match was won by Carrigan in a fall (4:29) over Connor Brewer (Avery County).
285lbs. Alvin Ibarra (3-2) had a bye in the championship round 1. The quarterfinal went to Conner Brewer (Avery County) by fall (0:31). Ibarra won the cons-round two by a fall (3:21) over Diego Meja Martinez (West Caldwell). Jerry Joines (Alleghany) won by a major decision over Ibarra in the cons round 3.
The Cherryville High School Concert Band has been practicing diligently for their Christmas concert. They will be presenting this event on Tuesday, December 9th, in Starnes Auditorium at 7 pm.
These talented young musicians have spent countless hours preparing for this performance. Come out and show your support.
This week’s calendar includes December 9th basketball at East Gaston. JV boys at 4:30 pm, followed at 6 pm by the girls, and the boys tip off at 7:30 pm.
December 9th, CHS Concert Band Christmas Concert in Starnes Auditorium at 7 pm. December 12th basketball at Highland Tech with the JV boys beginning at 4:30 pm, followed by girls at 6 pm, and the boys at 7:30 pm.
Also, on December 12th, wrestling at Newton Conover, this is a team match beginning at 5:30 pm. Come out and support your school.
