The Wise News Owl: A Mascot Made For Winter

Posted

North Carolina (WNN) - As the temperature starts to drop for the winter season, most animals begin to slow down, find warmth, and sleep until spring arrives. But for owls? That is not the case. These birds remain active all year long, even in the coldest months, and that is what makes them the perfect mascot for the Wise News Network.

Built For The Winter

Unlike hibernating species, owls are biologically equipped to thrive in winter conditions. Their bodies are insulated by a dense layer of feathers that traps warm air close to their skin, minimizing heat loss.

Owls are also thought to be very wise. Their behavior has been studied to show that instead of flying around to find their next prey, they use a hunting technique called "watch-and-wait," which allows them to conserve all of their energy. (biologyinsights)

Along with their smart behavior, they also have other skills such as silent flight, incredible hearing ability, and night vision.

A Sight To See

Although these birds are active all year round, winter is the season when people tend to spot them in the wild. This is why:

  1. Longer Nights: Owls are primarily nocturnal, and as the winter season rolls around, the days get shorter and the nights get longer. As a result, we tend to see them more in the evenings as we run our errands or come home from work.
  2. Food Scarcity: Prey and other animals become harder to find due to the colder conditions, which causes these birds to move closer to neighborhoods or barns where prey is more accessible.
  3. Easier to See: As trees lose their foliage, it becomes easier to spot owls in their natural habitat.
  4. Mating Season: December also marks the beginning of mating season for Great Horned Owls, which makes them especially active this time of year. NC Wildlife Commission states, " Many people may never have seen a horned owl; however, most have heard their staccato, Morse-code hooting: 'hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo, hoo-hoo' on cold nights. Most calling occurs when courtship begins in October, with peak calling in November and December, often at dusk and after dark." (NCWRC).
