Cherryville, NC (WNN) - It was a good week for the Lady Ironmen softball team. They won two games decisively against Stuart W. Cramer and let one slip away against Piedmont Community Charter. On April 21st, Cherryville defeated Stuart W. Cramer 15-3 on the road. They hosted Piedmont Community Charter on April 22nd but fell short 12-8 after leading most of the game. The Lady Ironmen closed out the week as they defeated Stuart W. Cramer 16-6 at home. Cherryville has now improved to 10-9 overall and 6-7 in conference play. Only three games remain in the regular season. They will host Bessemer City on April 28th, travel to East Gaston on April 30th, and close out the regular season on the road at Bessemer City on May 1st.
The Lady Ironmen bounced back from the previous week’s losses in a big way as they calmed the (Lady) Storm of Stuart W. Cramer on Tuesday evening. Cherryville had 10 hits with Maddie Avery and Kennedy Weathers leading the way. Weathers went 3-4, scoring 3 runs and driving in 4 RBIs. Avery went 2-3, scoring 1 run and 2 RBIs. Landry Beam added a stolen base. Grace Capps picked up the win, going 5 innings, allowing 3 runs, 0 walks, and 6 strikeouts. Kylie Hayslett took the loss for the Lady Storm, going 4 innings, allowing 15 runs (11 earned), striking out 1, and giving up 9 walks. Brinley Womack was the bright spot for her team as she scored all 3 runs for Stuart Cramer. She had 3 hits and 1 RBI, which came off an inside-the-park home run. The 15-3 victory improved Cherryville to 9-8 overall and 5-7 in the conference, while the Lady Storm dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-11 in the conference.
Cherryville took control of the game early, scoring 5 runs in the first inning. Jenny Brown and Landry Beam opened the game with back-to-back walks. Kate Mulvey grounded a sacrifice to shortstop to score Brown. Kennedy Weathers hit a sacrifice to second to score Beam. Jenna Anthony knocked a line drive to center field for a single. She advanced to second on a wild pitch. Addison Davis walked, and Anthony went to third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch allowed her to race home. Davis scored as an error in right field allowed Grace Capps to reach. Maddie Avery drew a walk and Camryn Shirley singled to score Capps. In the bottom of the inning, Brinley Womack singled and went to second on a wild pitch, then to third. Kylie Hayslett hit a sacrifice to third to score Womack. The Lady Ironmen increased their lead to 7-1 in the second. Landry Beam walked, then stole second. She scored when Kate Mulvey tripled. An error at second base allowed Kennedy Weathers to reach base and Mulvey to score. Brinley Womack scored her second run of the night when she hit an inside-the-park home run, reducing Cherryville's lead to 7-2. The fourth inning saw Cherryville pull ahead 10-2. Kennedy Weathers singled to left field and advanced to second on a throwing error. A pitch hit Jenna Anthony, and Addison Davis sacrificed to score Weathers. A line drive triple to center field by Maddie Avery scored Anthony, then Avery scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Ironmen were not done yet; they plated 5 more runs in the fifth to lead 15-2. An error at second base allowed Jenny Brown to reach, then Landry Beam walked. They both advanced on a wild pitch. After Kate Mulvey walked, Brown scored on a wild pitch. Kennedy Weathers hit a 2-run single to deep left field, scoring Beam and Mulvey. Weathers advanced on a wild pitch, followed by a walk from Jenna Anthony and Addison Davis. Maddie Avery's single to right field scored Weathers. Anthony scored off Camryn Shirley's fielder's choice. Stuart Cramer was able to score once more before the game ended on the run rule. Brinley Womack sent a line drive to center field for a single and then scored when Taylor Martin singled to right field.
The pesky Lady Patriots refused to give up in this one, even after the Lady Ironmen led for most of the game. They kept chipping away and were able to tie and then take the lead with 4 runs each in the 6th and 7th innings. At one point in the 6th, PCC hit 5 consecutive singles. Cherryville let a few chances slip away as they left 12 runners stranded on base. Both teams played well; in the end, more breaks went the Lady Patriots' way. They would earn a 12-8 come-from-behind victory, avenging a 15-6 loss to Cherryville on March 18 in Gastonia. Piedmont was led by Evangeline East, who went 3-4 and scored 2 runs, Shelby Ostrander went 2-5 and 4 RBIs, Bailee Roper went 3-4, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs, Danica Wright went 2-4 and knocked in 2 RBIs, and Morgan Loftin went 1-5, scored 3 runs, and 2 RBIs. Sophie Gibson earned the win for the Lady Patriots, pitching 7 innings and allowing 8 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, and 4 strikeouts. Cherryville was led at the plate by Maddie Avery, who went 3-5, hit 2 doubles, and had 2 RBIs; Kennedy Weathers went 1-2, drew 3 walks, scored 1 run, and stole a base; Jenny Brown went 1-2, scored 1 run, and had 2 RBIs. Jenny Brown started in the circle for the Lady Ironmen. She pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing 8 runs (7 earned), 11 hits, and 9 strikeouts. Grace Capps pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief. She allowed 4 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Piedmont Community Charter started the scoring with an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Chloe Rae Baker singled to shortstop, then stole second and third bases. Danica Wright singled to score Baker. Cherryville took the lead at the bottom of the second to go ahead 2-1. Addison Davis walked, and Maddie Avery reached due to an error at third base. An error in the right field allowed Camryn Shirley to reach, then she advanced to second on the same error. Avery and Shirley both scored when Jenny Brown sent a line drive to center field for a double.
The Lady Ironmen would take their biggest lead of the game, 8-1, in the third inning. Kennedy Weathers walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch sent her to third. Jenna Anthony and Addison Davis both walked. A line drive to center field resulted in a 2-run double for Maddie Avery, scoring Weathers and Anthony. Camryn Shirley hit to second base that resulted in an error; she advanced to second on the same error, Avery scored, and then Shirley scored on the throw. Jenny Brown walked and scored off a double by Landry Beam. Kate Mulvey singled, and Beam scored on the throw. Cherryville looked to be very much in control of the game at this point, but the Lady Patriots began to chip away at the lead. In the fourth, Bree Phillips walked, then stole second and third. Donica Wright knocked her in with a single. The fifth inning would end with Piedmont cutting the score down to 8-4. Evangeline East singled to center field, and Morgan Loftin grounded into a fielder's choice. Bailee Roper singled to left field, Loftin stole third. Shelby Ostrander hit a ground ball to second and scored Loftin. Chloe Rae Baker doubled to center field to knock in Roper. In the sixth inning, Piedmont Community Charter tied the game 8-8. Sophie Gibson singled, Kailee Walker singled, and Evangeline East did. The bases were loaded when Morgan Loftin hit a line drive to right field for a single that scored Gibson and Walker. Bailee Roper knocked a 2-run single that scored East and Loftin. The Lady Patriots put the game away in the final inning. A pitch hit Sophie Gibson, then Kailee Walker walked, and Evangeline East singled. Bailee Roper came to the plate with the bases loaded; she singled to score Walker. Shelby Ostrander hit a 3 -run double to center field to score East, Loftin, and Roper. The 12-8 non-conference loss dropped Cherryville to 9-9 overall, and their conference record remained 5-7.
The Lady Ironmen produced 17 hits and earned 7 walks en route to a 16-6 victory by the run rule. Winning pitcher Grace Capps allowed 6 runs (2 earned), 7 hits, struck out 4, and walked 2 batters over 4 innings. Jenny Brown pitched 2 innings in relief to close out the game. She struck out 4, allowed 3 hits, and 2 runs (1 earned). Maddie Avery went 3-3, scoring 2 runs and 1 RBI. Landry Beam went 3-4, scored 3 runs, and had 4 RBIs. Jenny Brown went 3-4 with 2 triples and scored 5 runs. Kennedy Weathers was 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring 2 runs and recording 1 RBI. Kylie Hayslett took the loss for the Lady Storm. She pitched 4 2/3 innings, allowed 16 runs (5 earned), 13 hits, struck out 5, and walked 7 batters. Dani Tejada went 1-2 with 2 RBIS, Brinley Womack went 2-4 and stole 2 bases.
Stuart Cramer led 1-0 after the top of the first inning, but that would be their only lead of the night. Brinley Womack hit a single to left field, then stole second base. Dani Tejada hit a sacrifice fly to score Womack. Cherryville took command in their first turn at bat. Jenny Brown was safe after an error at second base. Landry Beam also reached on an error, this one in left field. Another error allowed Kennedy Weathers to reach base, and Brown to score. Jenna Anthony's base hit scored Beam. Addison Davis was awarded first base due to being hit by a pitch. Weathers scored on a sacrifice fly by Grace Capps. Maddie Avery ripped a 2-run double to center field, scoring Anthony and Davis. An error by third base allowed Serenity Thomas to reach base. Jenny Brown walked, and Landry Beam singled in Avery. Thomas scored when Kate Mulvey walked.
The Lady Ironmen were now comfortably leading 7-1. Chloe Stokes started the second inning with a walk, an error put Vannessa Hawley on first, and another error allowed Megan Scharber also to reach base safely; Stokes scored on that same error. The Lady Storm showed some fight as they closed the score to 7-4 in the third inning. Kylie Hayslett doubled to left field; Dani Tejada reached on an error, and Ileigh Black singled to score Hayslett. Tejada went on to score when Vanessa Hawley hit a line drive single to right field. Cherryville answered in the bottom of the inning with 4 runs of their own. Jenny Brown tripled, followed by Landry Beam walking, and Kate Mulvey hitting a double to score Brown and Beam. Kennedy Weathers singled to center field, and Mulvey scored on the throw. Grace Capps singled to left field, then Maddie Avery doubled to score Weathers. Stuart Cramer kept clawing back; they narrowed the score to 11-6 in the fourth inning. Brinley Womack singled to second base, Kylie Hayslett reached when a ball was bobbled, then Dani Tejada drove in Womack with a single. Chloe Stokes grounded out to second, allowing Hayslett to score. Jenny Brown opened the bottom of the fourth with another triple, then scored on a wild pitch. Maddie Avery began Cherryville's fifth inning with a single to center field, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. An error by the right fielder allowed Jenny Brown to reach base, and Landry Beam singled to score Avery. The bases were loaded after Kennedy Weathers walked. Brown scored after Jenna Anthony walked. Addison Davis hit a walk-off 2-run single that not only scored Beam and Weathers but also gave Cherryville a run-rule victory, 16-6.
