Cherryville, NC (WNN) - Several of the Cherryville High School winter sports teams were in action this past week. There were some ups and downs, but overall, the Ironmen were well represented in all their endeavors. One more week of competitions, then all teams will take a break over the Christmas and New Year's holidays before returning to action in early January.
Cherryville hosted a dual meet with Jimmy C. Draughn High School on December 10th. The Ironmen bested Draughn 39 to 35. Coach Matt Powers has had his team perform well at each meet. Seven CHS wrestlers won matches, including in the following classifications: 106lbs. Geo Martinez over Josep H. Yang by decision, 113lbs. Holden Walker by forfeit, 120lbs. Bryson Yarbro by forfeit, 138lbs. Mason Powers won by a fall over Wade Garrison, 144lbs. Daniel Chapman won by forfeit, 165lbs. John Hedgpeth was victorious by a fall over Cayman Lewis in the 285-pound division. Maddox Carrigan defeated Lukas Rivera by a fall.
Apologies to Steven Wyatt; it was inadvertently reported that he did not participate in the swimming meet last week at Shelby High School. The official results were only partially uploaded, and some results were not initially reported. Now that they have corrected the results, it is apparent that not only did Stephen participate on December 4th, but he also had a great showing. He is literally and figuratively becoming a one-person swim team. This meet consisted of Cherryville, Burns, Highland Tech, Lincolnton, West Lincoln, and Shelby. According to swimcloud.com statistics, Wyatt currently ranks 99th in the NCHSAA, 11th in class 1A/2A, and 6th in the Western District. During this meet, he placed first in the 100 SCM Fly with a time of 1:02.86. This event is a total distance of 100 meters, and the SCM stands for short course meters; in other words, 100 meters swam in a 25-meter pool. A short course requires more turns. Fly is short for butterfly, a challenging event that requires immense strength and technique for a fast race, executing difficult maneuvers of powerful dolphin kicks, as the swimmer simultaneously performs arm pulls. Efficient underwater work and pacing are crucial. Steven seems to have conquered all those requirements. He took second place in the 100 SCM Breaststroke. His time was 1:18.57. This event requires strong, powerful rhythmic leg kicks and arm pulls. Pacing and powerful turns, along with pacing, are crucial to finishing in a good time. During a short course, more turns are required, so it is a demanding event. Steven also participated in the 50 SCM Breaststroke. His time in this event was 37.67. Congratulations to Steven on another outstanding performance.
A long-standing tradition in Cherryville is the concert band's annual Christmas concert. This year, the band entertained the audience on December 9th. These talented young musicians helped usher in the Christmas season and spread some holiday cheer with their performance. Christmas music puts almost everyone into a festive holiday mood. There will be little time for rest, as they will now dive into preparations for the concert competition season. If concert season is like marching season, we should expect them to bring home many more awards. They have already had a very successful year, and we are only at the midway point.
In its inaugural season, the Cherryville Ironmen now have a Winter Guard in conjunction with Bessemer City High School. What is a Winter Guard? It's similar to the Color Guard, which performs alongside the marching band, using flags, rifles, and other items. The Winter Guard is essentially the same, performing to audio music using choreographed routines.
