Cherryville, NC (WNN) - It was a busy week for the Ironmen athletic teams, due to events rescheduled due to last week’s rain. It was a great week for the soccer team as they recorded their first conference win in three years. The Lady Ironmen tennis team closed out their regular season, both cross-country teams performed well, and volleyball suffered two heartbreaking losses. It was a week of highs and lows, yet each player gave their all both in victory and defeat.
The men’s soccer team began their week with a tough loss but rebounded by the end of the week to secure their first conference win since a victory over East Gaston on October 9, 2023. The win came over long-time rival Bessemer City, as the Ironmen prevailed 5-3 on October 1. Cherryville will have two opportunities in the coming week to build upon that momentum as they travel to East Gaston on October 5 and to Highland Tech on October 7.
This one got away early, due in part to a dominating performance by Edwin Ramirez, scoring 5 goals, adding 2 assists, and creating 30 steals. Jerick Alvarado was also a defensive force with 40 steals, and Byron Blas scored 2 goals, added 1 assist, and had 20 steals for the Rebels. The Ironmen were led by Cole Kelly, scoring 1 goal, Denis Sorto made 1 assist, and Ethan Johnsen was credited with 12 saves.
The Ironmen returned home to face the Wolves of Lincolnton. The Wolves scored first at the 36:47 mark of the first half and again 11 minutes later, leading at the half, 2-0. At the 31:33 mark in the second half, Cherryville missed a penalty kick but retrieved the rebound, and Arturo Lopez scored the Ironmen's goal with an assist from Seth Locklear. Neither team scored again until the 13:15 mark when Lincolnton found the net and went up 3-1. They added two more goals in the final 8 minutes of play. Ethan Johnsen again had a busy night in front of the net as he recorded 16 saves from 21 opponent shots on goal.
Perseverance finally paid off for the Ironmen as they recorded their first conference win in 3 years. The victory gives Cherryville 2 wins this season as they look to build momentum heading into the end of the season. Unfortunately, statistics were not yet available for this match. They will be included in next week’s recap.
The cross-country teams competed on October 1, 2026, in the Mountain Island Charter Pink Out Invitational with 12 other schools registered to participate.
