Gastonia, NC — Gaston Cares announces the formation of the Gaston County Food Policy Council, a new collaborative created to strengthen the local food system and advance equitable access to healthy, affordable food for all residents.
As part of its launch, Gaston Cares invites the public to attend the first Food Policy Council meeting on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the community room at Highland Health Center, located at 607 N. Highland St., Gastonia, NC 28052. Attendees should use the rear entrance to access the meeting.
“As Gaston County experiences a decline in local farmers, a Food Policy Council is needed to monitor the strength of our food system and ensure residents continue to have access to high-quality, locally grown food,” said Donyel Barber, President of the Gaston County Food Policy Council.
The Food Policy Council will bring together community members, local organizations, farmers, food retailers, charitable food providers, health professionals, and government partners to identify challenges, elevate community voices, and develop policy, systems, and environmental strategies that support a more resilient and inclusive food system in Gaston County.
