Cherryville, NC (WNN) - At around 9:30 AM this morning, August 15th, 2025, emergency responders responded to a call at Cherry Hill Plaza off Highway 150 in Cherryville, NC. Onlookers could see smoke rising from the top of Cherryville's Food Lion.
While initially assuming the smoke was coming from routine processes in the deli, after checking, it was found that it was not the source of the smoke. Within minutes, the employees successfully evacuated the store and called 911.
Arriving within four minutes of the call, first responders found the source to be the mechanical room. Assistant Cherryville Fire Chief Colby Heffner noted that while the smell of smoke was present, the clouds mainly consisted of steam.
First responders are investigating all potential sources of the smoke to clear the store for safety. Food Lion employees believe the store may be able to reopen late this afternoon, but will likely require repairs. The rest of the plaza did not require evacuation and is still open for regular business hours.
