Vale, NC (WNN) — On Saturday, December 14, 2024, Vale celebrated the 50th Annual Cat Square Christmas Parade, a beloved tradition that began in 1974 as a small event by a youth group at Trinity Lutheran Church. Now one of Lincoln County’s largest holiday celebrations, the parade draws crowds from near and far to enjoy the community spirit, festive cheer, and holiday magic.
The parade began at 1:00 p.m. following its traditional route along Cat Square Road. The procession started at Zur Leonard Road and continued to Bill Sain Road, with participants gathering early to get ready. Equestrian groups and horseback riders lined up on Dan Rhyne Road, while local schools, businesses, and organizations prepared their floats. As the parade began, the streets echoed with laughter, holiday music, and cheers from families and friends.

The sunny weather made the event even more enjoyable for the thousands who lined the route, waving and celebrating. Many people came dressed in holiday attire, adding Santa hats, scarves, and even reindeer antlers to the festive atmosphere.
A special moment during the parade was the election of the honorary “Mayor of Cat Square.” This year, the title went to resident Ken Baxter, who was chosen by a community vote at the Cat Square Superette. Baxter led the parade with enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of unity that defines this close-knit community.

As part of the celebrations, the winners of the 2024 Parade Awards were announced, honoring the most creative and outstanding entries of the day:
The parade featured an array of floats, marching bands, and performers, each one telling a unique story of Cat Square’s history, culture, and community spirit. From decorated floats representing local businesses and schools. To the colorful and lively performance by the Oasis Shriners, there was something for everyone to enjoy. Local favorites like “Little Miss Cat Square” and “Miss Cat Square” waved from their floats. The “Cat Square Fairy,” who paints the town’s iconic logo on the road each year, added her magic to the event.
As the parade came to a close, there was a sense of pride and excitement in the air. The 50th Anniversary of the Cat Square Christmas Parade had truly been one of the best yet, thanks to the hard work and dedication of many volunteers, organizers, and local businesses. The community’s commitment to making the parade safe, enjoyable, and full of holiday spirit ensures that this tradition will continue for many more years to come.
The Cat Square Christmas Parade will return next year on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 1:00 PM Mark your calendars for another memorable celebration of the season!
