A Roller Coaster Week for Lady Ironmen Softball

Cherryville, NC (WNN) - It was an up and down week for Cherryville softball. The Lady Ironmen picked up a non-conference win over North Gaston but dropped two conference games to West Lincoln. The team will have another game packed week before taking a break in action for Spring Break. First up will be a rescheduled game from the beginning of the season that will be played on March 30th at Lincolnton with first pitch scheduled for 6pm. A trip to East Gaston follows on March 31st for a 6pm game. On April 2nd the Lady Ironmen return home to play host to East Gaston at 5pm.

  It was a tough night for the Lady Ironmen as conference leading West Lincoln won 14-0 by the run rule. Cherryville never seemed to get going after a sluggish start. The Lady Rebels were dominating at the plate, blasting 12 hits and scoring 14 runs. Melony Hoffman, Kaylin Pardo, and Quinlyn Avery collected 2 hits each. Kaitlyn Carpenter knocked in 3 RBIs and Payton Hood stole 3 bases. They also turned one double play. In the circle Danilyn Lewis, Holyn Lingerfelt, and Gabrielle Wright combined for a pitching trio that allowed 0 runs, on 3 hits, and struck out 5. Grace Capps started for Cherryville and gave up 11 runs (3 earned) off 10 hits, striking out 1 and issuing 2 walks. Jenny Brown came in relief of Capps. The Lady Ironmen’s 3 hits were from Landry Beam, Kate Mulvey, and Kennedy Weathers each with one. The Lady Rebels did most of their damage in the bottom of the second inning as they went up 7-0. Abree Sutton walked, Kaitlyn Carpenter reached on an error, Quinlyn Avery doubled to left field to score Sutton. Holyn Lingerfelt doubled to left field scoring Carpenter and Avery. Kennedy McCumber doubled to right field, then scored on an error. Kailyn Pardo doubled to left field, Melony Hoffman singled, courtesy runner, Sam Rudisill steals 2nd, Abree Sutton walked, then Kaitlyn Carpenter reached on an error as Pardo and Rudisill scored. Four more runs were added in the bottom of the third to increase the score to 11-0. Payton Hood reached on an error, then stole 2nd and 3rd. Gabrielle Wright reached on an error allowing Hood to score. Kaylin Pardo hit a line drive to center field for a single. Melony Hoffman singled to center field; Kaitlyn Carpenter hit a 3-run double line drive to right field. Cayleigh Auten, Pardo, and Hoffman scored. West Lincoln added three more in the bottom of the fourth as Kaylee Albano singled, Sam Rudisill walked, And Kaylin Pardo reached on an error to score Avery. Ensley Woods comes in as a pinch hitter and rips a triple that scored Rudisill and Pardo. Cherryville was unable to score in the next inning, resulting in the game ending due to run-rule.

The Lady Ironmen were able to bounce back with a 9-6 win over the Lady Wildcats of North Gaston. Gracie Capps started in the circle for Cherryville and gave up 4 runs off 6 hits, 0 walks, and 3 strike outs over 3 innings. Jenny Brown closed out the game with 4 innings of relief. She gave up 2 runs, 6 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4 batters. Cherryville collected 13 hits, Jenny Brown and Kennedy Weathers each had 3 hits. Weathers was a beast at the plate going 3 for 4, including a solo homerun, 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Landry Beam and Maddie Avery also had 2 RBIs. Camryn Shirley went 2 for 4 from the plate. Ella Blake and Landry Beam had a stolen base a piece. Kamryn Quill pitched 5 innings for the Lady Wildcats she gave up 8 runs (5earned) off 12 hits, walking 3 and throwing 4 strike outs. Parker Gordon threw 1 inning of relief allowing 1 run, 1 hit, 0 walks and struck out one. North Gaston collected 12 hits. Kamryn Quill went 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs, Parker Gordon was 3 for 5 with 1 RBI and Maddie Carpenter stole 2 bases.

  Cherryville scored first in the bottom of the first. Jenny Brown started things with a double, she advanced to third off a sacrifice ground ball from Landry Beam. Kate Mulvey singled to score Brown. The Lady Wildcats answered back in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. R. Hendrick singled, Maddie Carpenter doubled to score Hendrick. K. Hampton was hit by a pitch; Carpenter stole third and Hampton stole second. Kamryn Quill singled to score Carpenter and Hampton, and Quill stole second. Quill scored when Layla L. singled. The Lady Ironmen began to chip away at North Gaston’s lead in the bottom of the third. Kennedy Weathers blasted a four bagger for a solo homerun. In the top of the fifth North Gaston would get that run back as T. Postell was hit by a pitch, Layla L. singled, A. Whitlock walked and Smith walked to score Postell. Cherryville regained the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Addison Davis walked, Gracie Capps was hit by a pitch, Maddie Avery singled to score courtesy runner Ella Blake. Camryn Shirley doubled to center field to score Capps. Jenny Brown lined a double to center field to Avery. Landry Beam reached on an error that scored Shirley and Brown. Beam stole second and Kennedy Weathers doubled a fly ball to center field that scored Beam. Cherryville added another run in the bottom of the sixth to increase the lead to 9-5. Addison Davis was hit by a pitch, courtesy runner Ella Blake stole second, and Maddie Avery singled to right field scoring Blake. North Gaston attempted a rally in the top of the seventh, as K. Hampton doubled a fly ball to right field, Parker Gordon singled to center field scoring Hampton. That was all they could produce as the Lady Ironmen captured the victory.

Unfortunately for the Lady Ironmen, the second game of the week against the Lady Rebels had the same result as the first. West Lincoln remained undefeated as they improved to 11-0 overall and 8-0 in the conference after a 13-2 win over Cherryville. The loss dropped the Lady Ironmen to 6-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play. West Lincoln scored 13 runs off 10 hits and committed 2 errors. Gabrielle Wright gave up 2 runs, 2 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8 over 5 innings. Kaylin Pardo went 3 for 3 scoring 1 run, Melony Hoffman went 1 for 2 with 2 RBIs, Abree Sutton went 1 for 3 knocking in 2 RBIs and Kennedy McCumber was 2 for 2, scoring 2 runs and 2 RBIs. The Lady Rebels collected 7 stolen bases. Cherryville scored 2 runs off 2 hits and committed 3 errors. Jenny Brown made the start in the circle tonight, she gave up 11 runs (7 earned), 9 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2 over 3 innings. Reliever, Landry Beam, surrendered 2 runs, 1 hit, and walked 4 in 2 innings pitched. Jenny Brown knocked in 1 RBI, Camryn Shirley had 1 hit, Serenity Thomas had 1 hit and 1 run scored and Maddie Avery scored 1 run.

North Gaston took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Gabrielle Wright walked, Kaylin Pardo singled, and courtesy runner, Alyssa Zvirzdinis scored on a passed ball. In the top of the second the Lady Wildcats exploded for 6 more runs. Quinlyn Avery singled and stole second. Holyn Lingerfelt walked, Kennedy McCumber doubled to score Avery and Lingerfelt. McCumber advanced to third on a passed ball, then scored on a sacrifice by Payton Hood. Gabrielle Wright walked, Kaylin Pardo singled, courtesy runner, Alyssa Zvirzdinis and Pardo advanced on a passed ball. Melony Hoffman doubled to right field, scoring Zvirzdinis and Pardo. Abree Sutton reached on an error. Kaitlyn Carpenter sacrificed to short stop scoring courtesy runner, Sam Rudisill. West Lincoln stretched the lead to 11-0 in the top of the third. Kennedy McCumber singled and stole second. Gabrielle Wright singled to score McCumber. Kaylin Pardo singled. Courtesy runners Alyssa Zvirzdinis and Kaylee Albano executed a double steal. Melony Hoffman walked, Abree Sutton doubled to score Zvirdzdinis and Albano. Kaitlyn Carpenter reached on an error as courtesy runner Sam Rudisill scored. Cherryville got on the board in the bottom of the third. Serentiy Thomas singled, Camryn Shirley singled, Jenny Brown walked, Kate Mulvey reached on an error to score Thomas. In the top of the fourth Danilyn Lewis singled and advanced on a wild pitch, Sam Rudisill walked, Gabrielle Wright was hit by a pitch, and Lewis scored on a passed ball. The Lady Rebels pushed the score to 13-1 in the top of the fifth as Cayleigh Auten walked and stole second, she scored when #7 hit a sacrifice. In the bottom of the fifth, Cherryville scored 1 run as Maddie Avery reached on an error and advanced to second on a passed ball, then to third on another passed ball. Jenny Brown hit a sacrifice to second to score Avery to end their attempt to rally.
