Council also voted to possibly take action at the next Council meeting on July 8th regarding a home at 500 N Mountain St. The home structure suffered a fire on January 17th, 2024. In a June 5th “Notice of Public Nuisance” letter from Richard Elam (Zoning Administrator/Code Enforcement Officer) to the owner Collette Anderle in Huntersville, NC, the letter states, “To bring the property into compliance, either obtain permits to make all repairs to the house or permits to demolish the house.” In a response letter dated June 11th, 2024, the owner, Anderle, appealed the findings and requested a hearing per Cherryville City Code Sec. 14-41. The City finds the structure unsafe; thus, the appeal hearing is scheduled for the July 8th, 6PM Council meeting.

Cherryville Historical Museum

Councilwoman Janice Hovis gave an update on the Cherryville Historical Museum. According to Hovis, a group from First Baptist Church in Mount Holly came to the museum on Saturday, June 22nd, and was impressed and appreciative. “…myself and all the board members were there except one, museum board president Pete Craft addressed our visitors about the museum building background and history of the museum and a museum volunteer Sid Stroupe led the guests on a tour of the museum. Sid did a fantastic job telling them a lot about the history, and there are better days ahead for the museum,” stated Hovis.

The new splash pad next to the City/YMCA Pool should be open by July 4th if all the parts arrive on time. Some small parts are coming from Canada. During the discussion, it was emphasized that the splash pad would be free to use and that there would be no admission fees for users. Previous Council meetings mentioned that the splash pad would cost $500,000 and be “the best in the state.” According to City Manager Brian Dalton, approximately $350,000 has been spent so far, and they are considering adding shaded areas in the fall. Piedmont Lithium is funding the splash pad project per their recreation agreement with the City of Cherryville. Splash pad hours and days are yet to be determined and should be announced soon.

City Gym

An update was provided regarding the new City of Cherryville Gym on East Academy Street. The plumbing installation is taking place this week, and the concrete is scheduled to be poured next week. According to City Manager Brian Dalton, the building structure will be constructed within 2 to 3 weeks after that.
