One Dead, One Injured in Sunday Night Crash in Gaston County

Gaston County, NC (WNN)— A motor vehicle accident with injuries and reports of one fatality happened Sunday night, January 12th, on N.C. Highway 279 near Bessemer City, at the intersection of Dallas Cherryville Highway and Tryon School Road. As a result, Emergency responders arrived at the scene, where they confirmed one person had died and took another to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Details of the Crash
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to the scene just after 7:40 p.m. According to Officials Bradford Heath Kelly, 40, was driving a 1998 Chevy pickup truck east on N.C. Highway 279 when the collision happened. 21-year-old Wilmer Roberto Martinez Funez, traveling west in a 2020 Honda Civic, attempted to turn left onto Tryon School Road. Funez’s vehicle turned into the path of Kelly’s truck, causing a crash that claimed Kelly’s life. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges Filed
Funez sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital. Subsequently, He has since been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Road Reopened After Investigation
The crash temporarily closed N.C. Highway 279 near Tryon School Road as authorities conducted their investigation into the incident. The road has since reopened. Allowing vehicles to resume normal travel.
