More Than Free Donuts: The Story Of National Donut Day

Gastonia, NC (WNN)- June 6th, 2025, marks the 87th annual observance of National Donut Day, which is celebrated on the first Friday of June. Donut shops nationwide, including Gastonia, NC, have been celebrating by giving away free doughnuts and offering great deals.
The History Behind National Doughnut Day
In 1917, Salvation Army volunteer officers traveled to France, ultimately setting up field bases near the front lines of World War I. They were told to set up some bases close to the front lines to help lift the spirits of the troops. In makeshift huts, the officers eventually referred to as “the Donut Lassies,” handed out critical supplies, offered emotional support, and served freshly fried donuts.
These donuts became a source of comfort and lifted the soldiers’ spirits. When the troops returned home, the Donut Lassies were often credited with making donuts super popular in the U.S. The Salvation Army in Chicago started the holiday in 1938 to honor what the Donut Lassies did and raise funds to help people during the Great Depression.
Merle Heatwole, the national commander of The Salvation Army, stated in a press release,
“National Donut Day is a time to remember the lasting impact of a unique piece of history and to honor the heroic men and women who have served our country.” “Their courage and dedication to serving others reflect the heart of our mission and continue to inspire the work we do every day in communities across the country.”
How Donut Shops are Celebrating
At Krispy Kreme’s Gastonia Location (2990 E Franklin Blvd, Gastonia, NC 28052), customers can receive a free glazed donut when they come to the store and a free donut from the case. Customers can also buy a box of a dozen donuts for $2 when they buy any other dozen at the regular price.
That is just the beginning. The following Saturday, June 7th, Krispy Kreme is kicking off its “14 Days of Original Glazed” promo. Here’s what you need to know:
From June 7th to 20th, if you’re part of the Krispy Kreme Rewards program, you can get a dozen Original Glazed donuts for just $9.99—only one dozen per person daily. And there are some special days to note:
On June 13th, anyone can get a dozen Original Glazed for just 13 cents, but only when you buy another dozen at the regular price.
Then, on June 20th, you can get a dozen for only $2 when you buy another dozen at the regular price. They’ll also randomly pick a few lucky customers at participating stores to win a year of free Original Glazed doughnuts—one dozen each month from July 2025 to June 2026. It’s a pretty sweet deal!
At Dunkin Donuts, if you purchase a drink, you can get a free donut with it. This deal’s available at Dunkin locations nationwide.
