GASTON COUNTY, NC (WNN) – Gaston County will lift its State of Emergency at 5 p.m. Friday, May 10, demonstrating progress in recovery from the May 8th storms. Chairman Chad Brown signed the order as crews assessed damage.

“We’ve been very appreciative of the support from multiple state agencies over these past 48 hours, as well as the tireless work of first responders, emergency management personnel, linemen and community volunteers in helping our county get back on its feet,” said Chairman Brown.

North Carolina Emergency Management Director William Ray visited, ensuring the state’s support. Power outages dropped to below 8,500 customers, from a peak of over 45%.ย

Some areas of Gaston County are still experiencing storm related issues. For example, Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement’s phone lines were severed. Staff are unable to send emails or make calls. All animal adoptions are cash only until otherwise announced.ย

Other Gaston County residents are experiencing loss of internet services even though power has been restored. There are no time frames given for internet restorations in those areas.

The Red Cross will maintain the shelter in Dallas until Monday. Some county offices have reopened, but the administration building and courthouse remain closed. Missed appointments can be rescheduled for May 13, 2024.
