Gaston County Manager Steps Down: New Manager Appointed

GASTONIA, N.C. (WNN) – On June 25th, Gaston County announced that Dr. Kim Eagle, the County Manager, will be stepping down after five years of service. Matthew Rhoten, the current Deputy County Manager, will take over the County Manager position on August 5th, 2024.ย
The Gaston County Board of Commissioners appointed Rhoten to the position at its meeting on June 25th. Rhoten has held various positions with the County for ten years, including budget director, and has served as the Deputy County Manager for the last five years.
Statements per a June 25th Gaston County Press Release:
“Dr. Eagle’s passion for public service and dedication to all County employees has been remarkable, and our community is better off than it was five years ago,”said Board of Commissioners Chairman Chad Brown (R-Riverbend Township). “She has accomplished a great deal that will have a tremendous impact on our community for years to come. We wish her the best and thank her on behalf of all residents of Gaston County for her service.”
“It has been an honor to serve as the County Manager of Gaston County,” said Dr. Eagle.”I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I am confident that Matt will continue to drive our county forward with the same dedication and commitment.”
“I appreciate the confidence and support of the board of county commissioners, and I am incredibly honored, excited, and grateful for the opportunity to serve as the next County Manager.” said Matt Rhoten. “I look forward to continuing our work to enhance the quality of life for all residents of Gaston County. I am committed to a seamless transition and to building on the strong foundation laid by Dr. Eagle. I will forever be grateful for her mentorship over the past five years.”
“Losing a County Manager as dedicated and qualified as Dr. Eagle is not easy, but the County is extremely fortunate to have someone as seasoned and respected as Matt to accept the role as the County’s next Manager,” Brown said. “Our board looks forward to continuing to work with Matt and are confident in his ability to hit the ground running.”
According to the release, Rhoten obtained his undergraduate degree from East Tennessee State University, a Master of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and a Master of Science in Community and Economic Development from the University of Central Arkansas.
The transition period will involve Dr. Eagle and Matt Rhoten working closely to ensure a smooth transition that does not disrupt ongoing projects and operations.
