KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. (WNN) – In the early morning of December 1, 2023, an altercation between neighbors resulted in a firearm being discharged. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where a lengthy negotiation ensued.

At 5:00 a.m., the Gaston County Police Department received a call regarding shots fired at 1718 County Line Road in Kings Mountain, NC.

The perpetrator, 50-year-old Robert Joseph Rice, was involved in a civil dispute with his neighbors, which led to Rice firing gunshots.

Upon the officers’ arrival, Rice retreated into his home and refused to come out. Adam Gaub, the communications director for Gaston County, stated that officers obtained warrants for Rice for discharging a firearm, communicating threats, resisting and obstructing a public officer.

In a written statement, Gaub said, “Rice refused to come outside to meet with officers. However, after several hours of negotiations by phone, Rice exited his residence and was taken into custody.”

No information was provided regarding the nature of the original disagreement between Rice and his neighbors. The Gaston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that he was booked at 11:27 a.m. and is currently detained. Rice’s bond has been set at $10,000.
