KINGS MOUNTAIN, N.C. (WNN) โ€“ In the early morning of December 1, 2023, an altercation between neighbors resulted in a firearm being discharged. Officers were dispatched to the scene, where a lengthy negotiation ensued.

At 5:00 a.m., the Gaston County Police Department received a call regarding shots fired at 1718 County Line Road in Kings Mountain, NC.

The perpetrator, 50-year-old Robert Joseph Rice, was involved in a civil dispute with his neighbors, which led to Rice firing gunshots.

Upon the officersโ€™ arrival, Rice retreated into his home and refused to come out. Adam Gaub, the communications director for Gaston County, stated that officers obtained warrants for Rice for discharging a firearm, communicating threats, resisting and obstructing a public officer.

In a written statement, Gaub said, โ€œRice refused to come outside to meet with officers. However, after several hours of negotiations by phone, Rice exited his residence and was taken into custody.โ€

No information was provided regarding the nature of the original disagreement between Rice and his neighbors. The Gaston County Sheriffโ€™s Office confirmed that he was booked at 11:27 a.m. and is currently detained. Riceโ€™s bond has been set at $10,000.
