Throughout his nearly three-decade career, he has not only worked with racing legends but also helped shape cars that went on to set records. From Humble Beginnings to NASCAR Glory

Cronkrite’s connection to NASCAR began in the 1970s after moving south from Michigan. His first race was the iconic Indy 500 in 1970, where he quickly immersed himself in the NASCAR world. However, his early days were marked by an unexpected setback. “The only job I’ve ever been fired from was with DiGard in Daytona Beach,” Cronkrite recalled. Despite building cars that set records, including a pole position for the Daytona 500, Cronkrite was let go after a disagreement with a team owner. “As he walked off, he made some sort of comment about being a redneck. I just turned around and looked at him and said, ‘I believe I’ll take that.'”

Cronkrite’s extensive career spans nearly three decades in NASCAR, where he worked with some of the sport’s most legendary figures. “In my 26 or 27 years in NASCAR, there was an 11-year span in which I worked with or for nine people who are now in the NASCAR Hall of Fame,” he said. From crew chief to car chief, Cronkrite’s resume includes stints with racing icons such as David Pearson, Benny Parsons, and Donnie Allison. His most significant break came in 1978 when he worked with a young Dale Earnhardt, serving as Earnhardt’s first crew chief and car owner. “That was a huge opportunity,” Cronkrite said, reflecting on his time with the racing legend.

Marking Milestones with Iconic Drivers

Beyond Earnhardt, Cronkrite also made a mark with other NASCAR stars, including Mark Martin, Bill Elliott, and Janet Guthrie. He recalls a proud moment when he helped Martin set a new track record at Rockingham and later built Martin’s first Winston Cup car. “In his first four races, he sat on the pole twice. I’m pretty proud of that,” Cronkrite said. He also played a pivotal role in restoring the cars of Bill Elliott, including the legendary $1 million-winning car, which is now on display at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan.

Moments with The Pit Crew

Cronkrite has countless stories from his years in NASCAR, but one of his favorites comes from his first book. The story centers on a day when Dale Earnhardt and a young Dale Earnhardt Jr. were in the shop. “Dale Senior came down to fit the seat in my car,” Cronkrite recalled. “During that time, this little blonde-haired boy was quietly sitting in the front seat of his truck, hands hanging over the window, just watching us for hours. Dale would check on him now and then, but the boy never said a word.”

A Memorable Moment with Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr.

As the day ended, Cronkrite recalled, Earnhardt Sr noticed a mess in the truck. “Dale said, ‘Damn it, boy, looks like you spilled your drink!’” Cronkrite got closer and joked, “I can smell the difference between pee and Pepsi, and that’s not Pepsi.” It turned out the quiet boy was none other than Dale Jr., who had an accident. Cronkrite later told the story to Dale Jr. “He just laughed. It’s one of those moments that stick with you.”

Legacy in Writing and the NASCAR Community

Meanwhile, alongside his racing career, Cronkrite has transitioned into a successful author. His first book, NASCAR Redneck, has been embraced by the racing community, with notable figures like Dale Earnhardt Jr. showing support. “Dale Jr. bought a book and had me on his show. That jump-started my writing career,” Cronkrite said. He regularly participates in autograph sessions and public speaking events, therefore sharing his unique experiences with NASCAR fans.
