Cherryville, NC (WNN)— As Cherryville braces for the potential of winter weather, the city’s Public Works Department is ready to respond. Public Works Director Chris King shared the city’s strategy for managing the roads during the anticipated snowstorm.
Storm Timeline and Expected Conditions
The winter storm is expected to begin impacting Cherryville on Friday, January 10, 2025, around 1 pm. Snow is forecast to intensify throughout the day, with the heaviest precipitation likely occurring Friday evening. The winter weather is expected to decrease by 5 am on Saturday, January 11. Cherryville and surrounding areas can expect Total snow accumulations between 1 and 3 inches Ice accumulations around one-tenth of an inch.
Snow Plows and Slag Spreaders on Standby
“With the upcoming anticipated winter storm, we are going to be equipping our trucks with snow plows and slag spreaders,” King said. “With the small amounts they are projecting, we are planning to wait and reassess the situation early Saturday morning.” The Cherryville Public Works Department has said that salt and sand will only be used on the roads if absolutely necessary, as these treatments can potentially cause damage.
Priority Given to Main Roads
The city will start by clearing the main roads to make sure they are safe for travel and easy to drive on. These roads are the most important for getting people around the city. Neighborhood streets will be cleaned later, as they don’t affect traffic as much. King added that the city’s response may change depending on how much snow falls, or if ice starts to form on the roads, which could make travel more dangerous. Crews will continue monitoring the conditions to adjust their plan as needed.
Residents Advised to Stay Home
Residents should stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary. “If you have to travel, please use caution,” King said, emphasizing the importance of safety during potentially hazardous conditions. He reminded drivers to remain alert and exercise patience, as the weather could create unpredictable driving conditions.
Monitor Weather Updates and Stay Safe
Meanwhile, Cherryville joins many other communities across the region in preparing for the possibility of icy and snowy conditions. Residents are advised to monitor weather updates and remain indoors to avoid unnecessary risks. Staying informed through local news and weather alerts will help ensure everyone stays safe during the storm.
What to Expect During the Winter Storm
The upcoming winter storm could create some serious challenges for Cherryville residents. Roads might become dangerous and difficult to drive on, with some streets potentially becoming completely blocked or unsafe. The heavy snow and ice could weigh down tree branches and power lines, potentially causing unexpected power interruptions throughout the area. To stay safe, residents should prepare by having extra blankets and warm clothing, keeping flashlights and extra batteries ready, and stocking up on non-perishable food. Also, keep mobile devices charged and have a backup heating source, like extra blankets. Additionally, having snow shovels on hand can help residents clear walkways and driveways to maintain safer access to their homes during and after the storm.
