Cherryville Lotta Burger Contest: Who is the Best?

CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – After months of anticipation, the Lotta Burger Contest results are in. While each of the eight Lotta Burger locations amassed many votes, one winner pulled ahead significantly.
Lotta Burgers are a divisive topic in Cherryville. The history of this burger runs deep and everyone has an opinion on which Lotta Burger is the best. The Wise News Network (WNN) wanted to settle the score once and for all.
WNN crafted a survey, asking people to submit their favorite Lotta Burger restaurant in Cherryville. The options were: Blacks Grill, Heafner’s Superette, Home Folks Cafe, Mac’s Grill, Medical Center Pharmacy, Ronald’s Express Grill, the Shake Shop, or Vickie’s Grill.ย
With nearly 50% of the votes, the Shake Shop took home the prize.
The iconic Cherryville restaurant has a long history of selling this local dish. The Shake Shop opened in 1966 and is a family-owned business, currently operated by Kyle Jarrett and his son, Josh Jarrett.
Kyle Jarrett said his Lotta Burgers stand out because they use the best ingredients at the Shake Shop. The Cherryville Lotta Burger has two ground beef patties, tomatoes, white mayonnaise-based coleslaw, cheese, and pickles between a hoagie roll cut in half.
“We try to buy the best of everything, Every couple of days, we get a delivery. We don’t freeze anything,” said Kyle Jarrett.
Although they have mastered the craft of the Lotta Burger, the origin story for this sandwich is still somewhat up for debate. According to Kyle Jarrett, this tradition might have started with Harold Blackwood, also known as “Dag”.
Kyle Jarrett heard the Lotta Burger started when the past Blackwoods restaurant ran out of hamburger buns and the cook Ronnie Anthony used hoagie rolls instead. People loved the accidental creation and started ordering it as a Cherryville staple.
This is not the first time the Shake Shop has garnered media attention for its Lotta Burgers. The Shake Shop appeared in Our State magazine for a feature on Lotta Burgers in 2017.
However, it is a common sentiment around the city that you can’t get a bad Lotta Burger in Cherryville.
In addition to the Lotta Burger Contest, WNN also hosted a random Lotta Burger giveaway. During the interview, Kyle and Josh Jarrett selected the name of a random person who voted in the contest. Kyle Jarrett picked a letter, A-K, and a number, 1-30.
He selected K12, which intersected with Susan MacFarland’s entry. MacFarland of Durham NC has won a $50 cash prize to enjoy a Lotta Burger from the newly minted winners of the contest.
The Lotta Burger Contest has not only celebrated the Shake Shop’s triumph but also highlighted the unique menu item that is only found in Cherryville. While opinions on the best Lotta Burger may vary, the town’s shared love for this local delicacy brings the community together.ย
