CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – New staffing changes occurred this October 2023, after City Attorney Palmer Huffstetler retired following 33 years of service. The council voted for the new attorney during the October 9th city council meeting.
Yansea Taylor, 40, specializes in wills and real estate law. She operates five different offices for her law firm, Taylor Law, PLLC, with the newest location being in Cherryville. Taylor was unavailable for comment due to time constraints.
Taylor Law, PLLC, occupies the former location of Huffstetler’s firm on North Cherry Street. Brian Dalton, the city manager, said the former attorney completed all pre-existing cases before resigning. However, if there were any pending cases, they would be handled by Taylor.
At the time of Huffstetler’s retirement, the city remained involved in a lawsuit regarding the tenancy of the Cherryville Historical Museum building. Complications arose in the public upset bid process while he aided the city in the sale, causing the bid process to start over.
Huffstetler does not represent the city in the lawsuit or the closing of the museum building. The lawsuit is scheduled for court at the Gaston County Court House on November 6.
While Huffstetler did not provide a specific reason for his retirement, he now resides in Surf City with his wife. During his final City Council meeting, Huffstetler reflected on his time as the city attorney before resigning.
“I wholeheartedly endorse Yansea Taylor as my successor,” said Huffstetler at the city council meeting.
Following Huffstetler’s resignation, Mayor H.L. Beam invited Taylor and her family to the front of the meeting room. City Council Member Malcolm Parker motioned to hire Taylor, seconded by Council Member Jill Puett.
Dalton stated that Taylor was selected based on her qualifications and experience in the legal industry.
“We interviewed her, and everyone felt confident in her qualifications and skill set. It was a thorough process, and the council moved forward with her appointment as the new city attorney,” said Dalton.
Apart from her role as City Attorney, Taylor is also a family woman. She and her husband, Alex Taylor, have five children. According to her firm’s website, Taylor fell in love with NC after attending law school in the state.ย
Although Taylor hasn’t attended an official meeting in her new position, Dalton noted that she has been responsive and helpful in addressing any questions raised by City Council members.
The appointment of a new attorney has stirred mixed emotions in Cherryville. Many citizens feel sentimental about Huffstetler’s retirement but are also excited about Taylor’s arrival in town.
