Vale, NC (WNN) — On Saturday, December 14, 2024, Vale celebrated the 50th Annual Cat Square Christmas Parade, a beloved tradition that began in 1974 as a small event by a youth group at Trinity Lutheran Church. Now one of Lincoln County’s largest holiday celebrations, the parade draws crowds from near and far to enjoy the community spirit, festive cheer, and holiday magic.
A Parade that Brings the Community Together
The parade began at 1:00 p.m. following its traditional route along Cat Square Road. The procession started at Zur Leonard Road and continued to Bill Sain Road, with participants gathering early to get ready. Equestrian groups and horseback riders lined up on Dan Rhyne Road, while local schools, businesses, and organizations prepared their floats. As the parade began, the streets echoed with laughter, holiday music, and cheers from families and friends.
The sunny weather made the event even more enjoyable for the thousands who lined the route, waving and celebrating. Many people came dressed in holiday attire, adding Santa hats, scarves, and even reindeer antlers to the festive atmosphere.
Ken Baxter Named ‘Mayor of Cat Square’
A special moment during the parade was the election of the honorary “Mayor of Cat Square.” This year, the title went to resident Ken Baxter, who was chosen by a community vote at the Cat Square Superette. Baxter led the parade with enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of unity that defines this close-knit community.
