Cherryville, NC (WNN) – The 2024 varsity football season for the Cherryville Ironmen got off to a 1-0 start under the direction of new head coach Patrick Bowman.
The Cherryville Ironmen faced Avery County (Newland, NC) at home Friday night, August 23rd, in the 2024 season opener under the lights at Rudisill Stadium in Cherryville. It was a cloud-free, beautiful night, with temperatures in the mid-70s at kickoff and the mid-60s at game’s end for the hundreds in attendance.
You knew the night would be different when you heard the bus driving the players into the Rudisill stadium area on the east end of the field, escorted by the Cherryville High School Public Safety vehicle. The energetic Ironmen players and coaching staff entered the east-side stadium auxiliary gate. They walked through the Rudisill Stadium home-side grandstand led by the CHS Cheerleaders to the crowd’s cheering.
Also, this year, Coach Bowman and the new Cherryville High School Athletic Director Matt Powers wanted to incorporate the Cherryville New Year’s Shooters for the home games. So, as the CHS Ironmen took the field, muskets blasted to welcome the team’s arrival and fired during all the scores by the Ironmen. The firing of the muskets will be at all the home games this year, per the Cherryville New Years Shooters, Inc. officials.
The Ironmen scored on their first possession to get off to a quick 6-0 start. They would score 12 points in the first quarter and 8 points in the second, leading 20-0 by halftime against Avery County.
During halftime, the CHS Ironmen Cheerleading Team received their NC State Championship rings, and the CHS Marching Band performed their halftime musical show on the field.
The second half was a different ballgame. Avery County kept the Ironmen scoreless while scoring 6 points in the third quarter and gaining momentum in the fourth quarter. With minutes winding down, Avery scored 12 more points in the fourth quarter. The Ironmen held off a two-point conversion with just minutes left and kept Avery County out of the endzone for the rest of the game. The game was a nail-biter towards the end, but the Cherryville Ironmen stood their ground and won under Coach Bowman’s leadership by a score of 20 to 18.
This year, the 2024 Cherryville Ironmen home football games will be a great experience, win or lose, complete with grand entrances and musket blasts as only Cherryville, NC, can do.
