Biden Diagnosed With Aggressive Form of Prostate Cancer

Washington, DC (WNN) — Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, which has spread to his bones, his office said in a statement on Sunday, May 18th, 2025.

Diagnosis and Medical Details
The 82-year-old former president was diagnosed on Friday. Doctors spotted a “small nodule” on his prostate during a medical exam earlier this month. More tests showed the cancer had spread to his bones, his spokesman said in a statement.
His team confirmed the diagnosis, stating the cancer is “characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.” The statement also noted that while this is a “more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which allows for effective management.”
“The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians, according to his office.
Official Statement From Biden
“Cancer touches us all,” Biden tweeted Monday morning. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”

How Common Is Prostate Cancer?
According to clevelandclinic, Prostate cancer is common second only to skin cancer. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), for every 100 males, 13 will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Most will live normal lives and eventually die from causes unrelated to prostate cancer. Some won’t need treatment.
What Happens Next
Although Biden’s official treatment plan has yet to be announced, potential options for the former president include hormone therapy, or androgen deprivation therapy (ADT).
This treatment can lower levels of male hormones that may feed prostate cancer growth. This method can slow down disease progression and control symptoms even in advanced stages where the cancer has spread to the bones.
To keep an eye on cancer activity and check how well the treatment works, it’s key to monitor prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels.
After the former president’s diagnosis, the American Cancer Society put out a statement saying, “This news is a reminder about the tragic impact of prostate cancer in the U.S.”
“Early detection is key, and we are concerned given the 5% year-over-year increase in diagnosis of men with more advanced disease. We can and must do more to prevent late-stage diagnosis and death from prostate cancer,” the ACS said.
