CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – When individuals learn that the “Bearded Villains” are on their way to town, the usual assumption isn’t that the group will engage in community service. Yet, this club finds joy in exactly that: aiding its community.ย

On March 16, 2024, seven men convened in Cherryville to assist a veteran in need. They are all members of the Bearded Villains, a service organization that unites bearded men under the pretense of community service.

Despite their intimidating name, the Bearded Villains are anything but your typical villains. The group is made up of 165 chapters united to provide community service and support to those in need.

Matt Aldridge is a Bearded Villain from the Queen City chapter from Charlotte. He lives next door to a veteran named Glenn Hutchings. After living next to Hutchings for a couple of years, Aldridge realized that his neighbor could use some support.

Hutchings is a former Air Force member with 15 years of service. He has neuropathy in his legs, has had three hernias and also has diabetes. His disabilities make getting outside to do yard work and home maintenance difficult.

The Bearded Villains gathered to help Hutchings by cleaning his gutters and trimming his landscaping.

“They surprised me. All these big men come and take care of my outside,” said Hutchings.ย

Although he is grateful for the assistance, Hutchings said he receives little help from other organizations.

“I haven’t had anybody help me except the Baptist church that built the ramp,” said Hutchings.ย

The ramp was built for his wife, who passed away a year and a half ago. She had several disabilities and Hutchings was her primary caretaker.

“When she passed, I’m here alone, you know? I can’t even get to the doctors, you know, [with] the VA being in Charlotte,” said Hutchings.

Hutchings has a difficult time getting transportation to the Veteran Affairs Hospital in Charlotte. Typically, he gets a ride to Gastonia and then takes the bus to Charlotte. However, he frequently encounters trouble with getting home. This is just one example of the obstacles Hutchings faces when it comes to receiving care.

The Bearded Villains support Hutchings out of respect, viewing it as a privilege to aid a man who dedicated himself to serving his country.

While the Bearded Villains support various causes, the Queen City chapter has veteran members and understands the crucial need for outside support for veterans. Jesse Lane, a member of the chapter, offered insight into their frequentย focus on veterans.

“The Charlotte chapter does a lot with veterans because we have a couple of veteran members,” said Lane.

He discussed other veteran-focused events that the Queen City chapter has sponsored. One of their veteran members works alongside the organization called Warriors Always Rise. In October 2023, their chapter raised over $10,000 for the organization.

“They do a lot with getting the medical services that veterans need, helping fund the medical services they need. They do a lot with mental health retreats because of PTSD, depression, a lot of things that these guys are stuck with now that war’s over,” said Lane.

Some veterans have to rely on assistance from organizations like the Bearded Villains due to a lack of support. Hutchings makes less than $2000 a month and has to prioritize his necessities. For example, he cannot afford to get his water heater repaired.

“My water heater went out a little over a month ago, so I have to boil water to bathe, to do dishes,” said Hutchings.ย

He expressed a widespread sentiment among veterans, advocating for better support nationwide.

“I think it’s around America, it’s not just in North Carolina,” Hutchings said, “There should be a way to get what benefits we get and they don’t give us any information. I think it’s worse in some states than others.”

Aldridge in particular tries to help his veteran neighbor whenever he can. From bringing him meals to spending time with him, it is important to Aldridge that Hutchings receives support.

“He’s spent his whole life defending and taking care of others. We feel like it’s time to give back even if it’s just a little bit of what Mr. Glenn has given,”said Aldridge over a text message.

The other Bearded Villains feel the same way. After spending Saturday morning tending to the outside of Hutching’s home the Queen City Bearded Villains leftย

Cherryville feeling fulfilled.

“We get to hang out and have friends that we can hang out with, do fun stuff with and make a difference with, Yeah, we’re a little sweaty, we’ve got some dust on us, but I mean, at the end of the day, we feel a lot better having been able to help someone and hang out with our buddies,” said Lane.

Hutchings is one of many people that the Queen City Bearded Villains help. The cause of veteran’s rights is important to many of the members, however they provide support to many charitable causes. For example, the Charlotte chapter frequently helps feed unhoused individuals.ย

Although cleaning gutters is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to supporting veterans’ needs, the Bearded Villains Queen City chapter is here to make a difference. Their acts of service not only assist a veteran in need but also bring attention to the daily challenges faced by many veterans.
