Port Elizabeth, South Africa (WNN)- Five days after being abducted at gunpoint from his church in South Africa, Maryville, Tennessee missionary Josh Sullivan has been rescued. South African media sources began releasing the news shortly before midnight Eastern Daylight Time Tuesday.
Confirmation of Safe Return
A few hours later, Tom Hatley, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church in Maryville, TN, confirmed on his social media accounts and through Fellowship Baptist Church’s accounts that Josh Sullivan is indeed back with his family and unharmed. Sullivan and his family planted a church in a Xhosa-speaking community in the Eastern Cape of South Africa in 2018. This was also the scene of his abduction last week.
Details of the Rescue Operation
Acting on a lead, a multi-agency task force attempted to approach a vehicle at a home they suspected held Sullivan. As the rescue efforts began, the abductors sprung from the car and opened fire on the members of the task force that included the Anti-Gang Unit and the “Hawks”, as well as others. During the exchange of gunfire, three of the suspects were killed.
Global Prayers Answered: Sullivan Rescued Unharmed
Mr. Sullivan, who had remained in the car, was unharmed. An unnamed task force member told local reporters in South Africa that Josh Sullivan was “miraculously unharmed”. Since last Thursday, news of this saga has gained worldwide attention. Many in the faith community have been praying for the safe release of the East Tennessee pastor.
Prayers Answered with Successful Rescue
Consequently, their prayers have seemingly been answered with news of a safely executed rescue mission. All involved can now breathe a collective sigh of relief. Prayers of concern have turned to prayers of thankfulness.
A Special Easter Celebration
Easter celebrations this year will take on an even more special meaning this year for both Fellowship Baptist congregations in South Africa and the USA. Fear and anxiety have now turned into joy and relief.
Request for Privacy
This is exactly the outcome that many people have been hoping and praying would happen. Naturally, with such great news, many wish to share this excitement with the family and friends of the Sullivans. Pastor Hatley and the church have asked, through their website, to please respect the privacy and refrain from contacting the Sullivans and family directly. The media has also been granted only limited access as well. This type of ordeal can be very taxing on all involved after such an intense five days.
Joyful Conclusion to Intense Ordeal
We are overjoyed to be able to provide this update that includes such a happy ending. This was a mission accomplished through the valiant efforts of several heroic agencies and fervent prayer. Happy Easter!
