Cherryville Area Sees Two Days of Snowfall
By: Wise News Network Staff
Cherryville, NC (WNN)— A light snowfall touched down in Cherryville on Wednesday morning, February 19th, with a more significant accumulation occurring by Thursday morning, February 20th.
WNN reporter Rusty Wise reported that approximately a quarter-inch of snow had accumulated by Thursday morning, following the initial dusting on Wednesday. This two-day event was driven by two distinct weather systems: a low-pressure system that impacted the region on Wednesday, followed by a clipper storm on Thursday.
Two Storms, Two Days of Snow
The initial light snowfall on Wednesday was associated with a low-pressure system that tracked across the region from the south. This system brought initial precipitation, setting the stage for the more impactful clipper storm that followed.
On Thursday, a fast-moving clipper storm swept through the area. These storms are known for their quick bursts of snow and limited moisture. The clipper contributed to the snowfall throughout Thursday morning, with total accumulation that was predicted to reach half an inch and three-quarters of an inch.
Minimal Impact, But Caution Advised
Despite the small amount of snowfall, winter weather in North Carolina often leads to disruptions. “We’re in the South—it doesn’t take much snow to wreak havoc,” Wise noted, referring to the potential for accidents and traffic delays when even a small amount of snow or ice accumulates on the road. Residents should take extra caution when traveling and avoid unnecessary trips if possible.
Gaston County Schools Shift to Remote Learning
In light of the combined impact of these snow events, Gaston County Schools transitioned to remote learning on Wednesday, February 19th, and Thursday, February 20th.
The district announced that all students would be working from home to complete assignments provided by their teachers. The decision came as a precautionary measure, as weather conditions continued to develop through the morning. The initial snowfall on Wednesday, combined with the anticipated effects of the clipper on Thursday, prompted the shift to remote learning.
School officials will continue monitoring the weather and adjust the schedule further if necessary. In the meantime, they asked parents and guardians to ensure that students are prepared for a day of remote learning, with all assignments accessible through the district’s online platforms.
Grocery Stores See Increased Demand
Grocery stores in Cherryville and nearby areas often see a spike in demand for staples like bread, milk, and eggs during winter weather events. Shoppers lined up early to stock up on necessities, anticipating potential disruptions. Wise jokingly mentioned the increased demand, saying, “If you get an egg, good luck.”
Looking Ahead
While conditions in Cherryville remain manageable for now, officials are advising residents to stay informed and prepared as the weather event continues through Thursday. Although this clipper storm will likely be short-lived, icy conditions on local roads and sidewalks could persist.
