Winter Storm Wraps Up in Cherryville Leaving Ice and Sleet Behind

By: Lauren Ramsey – Wise News Network

Cherryville, NC (WNN)— A winter storm that began in the afternoon on January 10th, 2025 brought a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the Cherryville area, quickly creating hazardous conditions. As the storm progressed, icy patches formed on local roads, causing significant challenges for drivers and leaving behind a slick, dangerous layer of frozen precipitation.

What Happened?

As WNN reporter Rusty Wise reported, “We missed the big snow.” While Cherryville did see some snow, Wise explained that warm air overran the cold air, preventing heavy snowfall from accumulating. Instead, the area experienced freezing rain and sleet.

Yesterday, Cherryville also experienced “virga,” a weather phenomenon where snow falls but evaporates before reaching the ground. By the afternoon, however, snow began reaching the surface, marking the start of the storm.

Local Response to the Weather

Despite the lack of significant snowfall, locals took advantage of the winter weather. Four-wheelers were seen navigating the slick roads, and ATVs made their way across the icy terrain. Children also ventured outside, playing in the snow, though it was too light to build a snowman.

Road Conditions

The storm started as snow but quickly transitioned to freezing rain before ending with sleet overnight. By morning, about one inch of sleet covered the streets, causing hazardous travel conditions. While the area did not receive the heavy snow some had anticipated, the icy buildup created slick spots on the roads.

Looking Ahead

Though temperatures are expected to rise to around 40°F today, clearing most roads, icy patches are likely to persist. Drivers should remain cautious and be aware of black ice tonight as the storm moves out. For now, the area is recovering from the brief but intense storm, with hopes that the warming temperatures will ease the lingering road hazards.
