Winter Storm Hits: How Cold Do Bridges Get In Winter Weather?

Cherryville, NC (WNN)— Cherryville, is grappling with freezing temperatures as a winter storm sweeps through the area. WNN Owner and Founder Rusty Wise used a thermal gun earlier today Friday, January 10th, 2024 to measure the surface temperature of the overhead bridge in Cherryville, recording a frigid 16.8°F—much colder than surrounding surfaces.

Why Bridges Are Dangerously Cold

While grass and gravel registered temperatures of 26°F and 25°F respectively, the bridge’s surface was significantly colder. This is because bridges lose heat faster due to exposure to cold air from all sides, unlike roads, which retain some warmth from the ground.

Snow Accumulating on Freezing Surfaces

Earlier in the day, Cherryville experienced “virga,” a weather phenomenon where snow falls but evaporates before hitting the ground. By the afternoon, snow began reaching the surface. With the bridge’s dangerously low temperatures, any precipitation is sticking and freezing instantly, creating hazardous conditions.

Salt Brine Struggles Against Severe Cold

State roads were pretreated with a salt brine solution to prevent freezing by lowering the freezing point of water to approximately 28°F depending on the concentration of salt or sodium chloride. However, Wise noted that this treatment is ineffective on the bridge due to its surface temperature being far below the brine’s effective range.

Residents Urged to Exercise Caution

As the first snowstorm in three years continues, Wise urged residents to remain vigilant, particularly on bridges and overpasses. “Anything that falls is going to stick,” he said. Wise News Network will provide ongoing updates as the storm progresses.
