Cherryville NC (WNN) – On December 12th, 2024 a water line was hit by Ripple Fiber while installing fiber optic lines under West Church Street/Highway 150. The City of Cherryville responded by repairing the main break that day but had several other smaller breaks to repair. The Department of Transportation has currently shut down the road during the ongoing repairs today, December 16th, 2024

According to Jason Stone, the Water and Sewer Superintendent for Cherryvilleโ€™s Public Works, the city plans on having the road open again by 5 PM on December 16th, 2024. They have everything in order to have it paved as soon as the main repair is complete.

What to know

Citizens may be concerned about the amount of water running on Highway 150, but this is not from the damage to the line. Stone decided to let the fire hydrant near the run in order to prevent dirt buildup. This prevents it from entering the local houses water supply. This also helps prevent air from being trapped in the lines. This avoids damaging the local houses piping once connections have been fully restored.

The repairs to this area should be completed today. Stone also mentioned that the company responsible for the damage (Ripple Fiber) will not be allowed to operate from the 24th to the 26th of December. The Cherryville, NC, public works department will be closed during this time. This will prevent any breaks from occurring at a time when they can’t be responded to.
