CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – One of Cherryville’s favorite parks received a notable makeover. After being closed for renovations, West Gate Park is now open and ready to be enjoyed.ย

The Grand Reopening took place on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Several changes have been added to the area, including new paving to the road and a pickleball court.

Additionally, a basketball court has been added. The city crews installed black fences around the basketball and pickleball courts, and they poured new concrete into the picnic pavilion.

Mayor H.L. Beam said the county initially gave the City a grant of $350,000 to complete the renovations. However, the expenses of the Cherryville park ran high. The City ended up using some of the recreational grant money from Piedmont Lithium to complete the project.

For the next 20 years, Piedmont Lithium has pledged to donate $500,000 annually to Cherryville’s recreational program.

Although the new changes have improved the park immensely, it still must undergo a few more renovations.

“We still have just a few things to touch up. Some of the pipes that are exposed, we’re going to be painting those to dress it up, make it look nice,” said Mayor Beam.ย

Most of the city council attended the Grand Reopening, expressing gratitude to the benefactors, citizens, and those who played a key role in the planning process.

“It took a while, but to see it come to fruition is absolutely great. We’ve got a beautiful park here.” said Council Person Jill Puett. ย

The park has been recently sodded. New grass will sprout all around the area come springtime, and the park’s renovations will be seen in all their glory.ย

The president of Cherryville Chamber of Commerce, Pete Craft, expressed sentiments on behalf of the Chamber.

“We strive and want to make Cherryville a wonderful place where we can work, where we can live, and where we can play,” said Craft.

As Westgate Park continues to evolve, Cherryville citizens will enjoy the space for years to come. The recreationalย courts, spacious grass areas, and revitalized picnic pavilion will be a constant source of outside fun for all to partake in.ย
