Lincolnton, NC (WNN) – Hopefully Lincoln County NC residents were good this Christmas season as “Krampus” has been spotted. Krampus is alive and well and he’s ready to do his mischief around the Holiday Season. Our WNN crew caught up with Krampus at the Odd Duck store in Lincolnton NC where he resides at times.

Krampus has also stirred up many on social media by his devilish looks especially by being an entrant in the latest Lincolnton Christmas Parade held on November 26th.

When asked about the parade controversy, Krampus stated “I think it is new to a lot of people and a lot of people just don’t understand where the folklore comes from. So, they only honestly assume that is just pure evil.”

Some say the name Krampus originates from the German krampen, which means “claw,” and tradition has it that he is the son of the Norse god of the underworld, Hel. While others say it’s a Bavarian word stemming from krampn, meaning “rotten”, “dead”.  The creature itself is part goat with its large horns and hooves, part human, and the rest including the face looks just downright scary. The earliest years had Krampus scaring in the Alpine communities of Germany and Austria, by warding off ghosts and spirits. In later years he’s teamed up with Santa Clause as the bad where Santa Clause is the good.

“As a counterpart, Krampus was the foil for Saint Nicholas. Now Saint Nicholas would reward the good children with precious fruit and Krampus would deal with the bad children with either coal or switches.” per Krampus.

The December 2015 movie release of Krampus in the US brought more attention to the creature and has been gaining traction ever since.

Krampus went on to say: “I’ve enjoyed, just a lot of the excitement and acceptance of something new and exciting. this has been around for thousands and thousands of years, as is the folklore, but only has gained traction stateside in the past 5 to 10 years. So, it’s very exciting to see people embrace it and have fun with it. And that’s basically what we’re trying to do is bring something different and fun to the community.”

Hopefully, none of us gets a visit from Krampus, so let’s all be good for goodness sakes.
