CHERRYVILLE, NC (WNN) – The City of Cherryville has taken steps to identify weaknesses in the sewer system. This initiative comes after several bouts of heavy rain and flooding.ย

According to a statement posted to the City Facebook page, they conducted smoke testing of some sewer lines on January 30, 2024. The testing occurred between Academy and North Howell Street.

“You will notice smoke coming from the area. This is a part of the process.” stated the Facebook post.ย

Within the same week, onlookers identified a Sanitary Sewer Overflow (SSO) off West Carroll Street. The area is not between the streets that qualified for a smoke test.

The SSO was reported to city officials on Saturday evening.

Jason Stone is the Water and Sewer Superintendent for Cherryville’s Public Works. In an email, he said the SSO produced less than 1000 gallons of sewage in the time it took for his team to remedy the situation.ย

The SSO was caused by a debris blockage.

“This blockage was due to tree roots and large rubber pieces that were in the pipe. We cut the Roots out with our jet trailer and root cutter.” said Stone.ย

Additionally, he said his team is working to determine where the rubber came from.

Despite the SSO being rectified within hours of the report, it was potentially spilling for days prior. Allegedly, witnesses noticed a sewage smell as early as Wednesday, January 31, 2024.

“We will be monitoring this line and other lines in the area closely to avoid a spill in the future.” said Stone.ย

Aside from the SSO reported on Saturday, residents have noticed sewage discrepancies when there is heavy rainfall. Notably, a manhole near West Academy Street will project water when heavy rain is present, spreading sewer debris on the ground. Locals have dubbed it “The West Gate Fountain.”

It is imperative for people to recognize signs of a sewage leak. Some indications include: foul smells, wet ground outside, unusual plant growth and slow drainage. If you suspect a sewage leak, call local authorities immediately.

The sooner the City becomes aware of an SSO, the sooner they can solve the problem.
